Clonidine for ADHD, Inattentive Type?

Posted by Deano on January 12, 2002, at 13:16:27

Was recently informed by a psychiatrist that clonidine is first-line med for ADHD, Predominately Inattentive Type. This was a surprise to me, as it was my understanding clonidine does not do much for sustained attentional deficits and cognitive symptoms of ADHD. Would appreciate any input regarding efficacy of clonidine for inattentive symptoms of ADHD. Thanks.

If clonidine produces too much sedation for you, you may move on to Guanfacine (tenex). But clonidine is clinically useful for many ADHD patients and its cheap because its available in generics...

Thanx for posting...

Clonidine -might- be considered a first line medication for those ADHD patients with aggressive symptoms (such as those with Conduct Disorder). However, Guanfacine (Tenex) is considered superior, since it is less sedating and is longer lasting.

It is generally believed that Alpha-2 agents (like Clonidine and Guanfacine) are good for hyperactive and impulsivity symptoms, but not so much for inattentive symptoms. There are some indications that they -do-, however, positively affect inattentive symptoms but not nearly to the extent as other medications...

Frankly, I'd likely try it to see what happens, if other medications weren't working for my ADD/Inattentive symptoms.

I don't think it's first line. I think it works for some people who have ADHD because it calms them down and let's them focus. But in inattentive people who zone off and daydream a lot I really don't see it helping. I take Adderall in the morning and am prescribed clonidine to help me sleep. I have taken it awhile so the sedative effect has worn off. It doesn't help focusing whatsoever for me. I know it's used in some ADD cases, but I can't see why from my experience with it. But like I always say, everyone responds differently to meds and you never know what will work.
