Klonopin is Just the Most Fabulous Drug ;-)

Posted by Simcha on January 11, 2002, at 14:08:54

I'm now a big fan of Klonopin. I have almost no side-effects from it. I have zero anxiety for the first time in my life. My restless legs are calm. I'm not grinding my teeth.

Hooray for Klonopin!

OK, now you can call me a druggie!

I'm just sorry it took you this long to find it. (nm) » Simcha

They always go on & on saying its a very addictive drug like Xanax or Ativan, which I just don't believe because Klonopin has a too subtle onset of action (1 hour to start working) & lasts too long to be tremendously reinforcing.

In fact, Klonopin is the only psychiatric drug that has worked for me but doctors are too afraid to dispense more than 0.5 mg/day only as needed & try to replace it with drugs that don't work for my social phobia/anxiety such as anti-depressants & Neurontin.

No psychiatric drug is a picnic to get off of if you take it long enough. My personal prediction is that sometime down the road, drugs like Effexor, Paxil, etc will be considered habit forming. This happens with most classes of drugs. They are first accepted and dependence is denied, and then later it is accepted when years of data are examined: e.g., opiates etc. Whether or not benzos are hard to get off of is not the issue... it's whether they help or not. There is not sufficient data on the withdrawl of the newer drugs like neurontin, so the medical community doesn't regard them as dangerous. 10 years ago, nobody would have told you that an SSRI was associated with a severe discontinuation syndrom for a certain percentage of people. Now it is beginning to creep into the knowledge base.

Fortunately mine doesn't think it's evil. In fact, when I expressed concerns because it's supposed to be addictive, she quickly allayed my fears. She said it's got a safer profile that many other drugs, and that she's had many patients on the same dose for years without needing to escalate the dose. Furthermore, she reemphasized that chronic anxiety is just plain bad for you and encouraged me to not undermedicate it, especially with a drug that I seem to tolerate nicely (which is a rare thing for me).

Klonopin is my friend.

My doc is like yours and thinks it's very safe; although it may be difficult to quit. So are blood pressure medications, etc.

It was originally used, and still is used, for seizures at levels of 8 to 10 mg/day. If you can do well on 0.5 mg/day, more power to you. The normal for panic types is maybe 3 mg/day. I used to take that much but have tapered down to half that now, thanks to therapy and CBT.
