Hi! I am presently on Nortriptyline-- I've tried other meds and have been one of those who have had adverse reactions. Anyhow, I have heard about a new type of drug therapy called Sa-me( I'm not sure of the spelling) Our MacLeans' magazine had an interesting write up about it.....of course, it is not available in Canada. But from reading the price, I don't think I could afford it!! In any case, would like to get some feedback -- hopefully, you will be able to decipher the name!

Hello,
SAMe is not really new. Its been around since 1975 in Europe, and in the states for a few years. Actually it’s a natural chemical that the body produces. Here's a good link about SAMe-- http://www.iherb.com/same2.htmlYou can buy it online if you have a card. I gave it a trial for about two months, but didn't notice any difference in my mood at all. I think it cost me about $40 a month to take it.
There is a study there that says SAMe is more effective than the tricyclic desepermine, but I really question the source.

>Lawnsong-
I took SAM-e for 2 months last year. Boy, was my mind busy for those 2 months! It actually got uncomfortable, I just couldn't shut it off! Maybe it was a form of hypomania. There are entire books written about SAM-e, though , with claims of great efficacy. You can buy it as a supplement from health food stores or over the Net.

Lawnsong - as others have said it's totally none-prescription so you can easily order it from the internet. I got it from one of those herbal medicine groups. Also I think it's sold in Wal-Marts which I assume you have in Canada. It may be more available than you think.
I used it to augment another AD (wellbutrin). I'm not sure I gave it enough of a run to see if it really would help. I went off it at my internist's recommendation because I was having some GI symptoms that she thought might be related. I never tried it again because it was so expensive and I guess at the time I didn't feel bad enough to make that investment. I had only been on it a few weeks I think and had noticed no real improvement.
There's a book about Sam-e written by Dr. Richard Brown at Columbia Univ. He certainly sings its praises and I'm sure it's been very effective for lots of people because I think it sells pretty well. I actually had a telephone conversation with him about using it as an augmentation drug. It seems to be pretty safe although it's definitely not recommended for bi-polars as I recall.
