Zyprexa question

Posted by Margit on November 18, 2001, at 23:27:00

Does Zyprexa work for dopamine depletion? In other words, does it increase dopamine levels and how? Thank you for any response.

It can increase dopamine in some parts of
the brain that are indirectly linked to
a particular serotonin receptors. Specifically
the serotonin 5-ht2a receptor. Blocking this
receptor in Zyprexa will increase dopamine release.

The idea is to increase dopamine release to
counteract the dopamine antagonism in the medication
in areas of the brain that are not involved
in schizophrenia positive psychosis.

At the lower doses, the 5ht-2a antagonism dominates
the dopamine antagonism in the medication.

Thank you for your informative answer. I wanted to ask you if you also knew wheter it has any effects on cognitive function, or emotions (numbing)?

Zyprexa can make one a little drowsy.
I am unusually sensitive to drowsy meds and
zyprexa hasn't been bad at all (I take 5 mg/day).
I was a little shocked that it had no
cognitive downside, I was expecting it to
have some problems that I had with Serzone,
but it didn't. It has primarily helped me
with sleep and anxiety and facial pain, less
so for depression. I think I can potentially
augment it with an SSRI to get a robust anti
depressant response.

Good luck to you.
