clonazepam and alcohol

Posted by tensor on November 15, 2001, at 5:10:19

I know what they say about benzos and alcohol.. But in real life, can a couple of beer while on clonazepam cause any serious problem or problem at all?

Tensor,
I personally have never taken Clonazepam, but my friend was dx'd with Restless Leg Syndrome and put on Clonazepam for that. She went to a party and had only two drinks. The alcohol effected her like never before. She was REALLY drunk and when she got home, was sicker than a dog!! She wasn't sure if it was caused by the Clonazepam, so next time she was out, had a couple more drinks. Same thing happened!! Believe me, before the Clonazepam, this girl could drink anyone under the table and NEVER get sick! It's weird , but the Clonazepam effects her BIG time when she drinks. Just thought I'd let you know! Good luck!

hellllloooo again buddy tensor,

take this from a drinker/benzo-fan: the combination can seriously wipe out my memory in no time. much lower alcohol tolerance. i don't know if the alcohol cancels out the clonazepam, but it does *potentiate* it--meaning, it becomes too powerfully sedating (nice term: passing out).

combine the two and you are much more likely (in my experience) to fall asleep or go on a blackout drunk.

Back in my heavy partying days..last week. Kidding..20+ years ago. I used to take 10 mg valium, smoke a joint, crack open a brew, and I was set for the night. Wonderful.
I take Clonazepam now but don't drink and would be a little scared about trying to get away with things I could do in my 20's.

I can't talk about clonazepam since I've never tried it, but I am on 3mg Xanax per day. Once I was over the initial sedation (a couple of weeks) I did not feel any difference at all while drinking. During the first couple of weeks it definitely enhanced the effects though.

I've been on Klonopin for over two years, between 1 and 2 mg/day, and have no trouble with one or two glasses of wine with dinner. I certainly wouldn't do what I did in my 20's on it, but then I wouldn't do what I did in my 20's without Klonopin, either.

I believe that, technically, Klonopin is somewhat more sedating that the other benzo's and alcohol has sedating properties as well, but alcohol wears off sooner. I take the Klonopin just before bed when any sedating effect is beneficial and the effect of wine with dinner probably has worn off.

I've been taking klonopin (clonazepam) for a while now, daily dosage ranges from 1.5 mgs - 3 mgs. I really don't drink, have not found the desire or need, so haven't had to worry about it for quite some time. However, my husband has been making his own microbrews, and he made some red Irish based Stout (which he considers his masterpiece) and begged me to give it my seal of approval. I did.

It had an original gravity between 1.087 and 1.100, giving it an alcohol range of 14% to 15%. I had one 12 oz. bottle and it did make me foggy, not out-and-out drunk, just kinda sleepy.

Remember though, I no longer drink and this was a first in a very long time. I would hypothesize that a few "lighter weight" beers while taking a benzo like clonazepam should be fairly safe as long as one remembers not to take off in their vehicle and other common sense rules. AND: if the one drinking has no pre-existing kidney or liver problems, nor are they taking any high cholesterol meds and/or any other meds (i.e.carbamazepine) that have serious side-effects within that same system of the body.

One more item to keep in mind is that some of these meds are respiratory depressants as is alcohol. Any problems there would be magnified and could be quite serious.

Xanax alcohol horror story

I had only 3 1/2 beers and a bunch of xanax one day (I was told the pills were only 1 mg each so 40-50 sounded about right). I had never drank & drove ever, I was always the person telling people not to drive drunk & taking there keys away. Anyways, I started having this strange dream where I was being handcuffed & put into the back of a police car. Only it turns out I decided to go for a cruise in my car & ran into the back of some guy. The police took me to jail but the jailer kicked me out for being way too messed up, so I ended up in the emergency room for eight hours until my parents could pick me up (I was away at college). I was acting so strange that the doctors thought I might have a brain infection so they gave me a lumbar puncture (spinal tap) with no anasthesia---OUUCHHH! Now I have a DWI & have to do 400 hrs of community service & pay serveral thousand in fines & lawyers fees because of this stupid incident.

A few weeks later a friend of mine was driving his ford explorer on a us highway & was messed up on the same combination of xanax & beer. He thought he saw something in the road & swerved into a parked car on the side of the highway at 60 mph which pushed the parked car over a fire hydrant and into someone's front lawn.

Klonopin/Clonazepam is supposedly stonger or as strong as Xanax so i would not drink with Klonopin. Why don't you just take a double or triple dose of Klonopin & you will be as messed up as if you were drunk anyways. Also Judy Garland died from mixing Valium & Alcohol.

It's has nothing to do with getting drunk or messed up or something. Sometimes I want to take a beer just for the taste, don't you???

actually its slightly less potent than xanax, in potency from greatest to least (of the three strongest) it goes xanax, klonopin, ativan

>Why don't you just take a double or triple dose of Klonopin & you will be as messed up as if you were drunk anyways.

orrrr... don't drink so much, orrrr... don't take as much benzos when you drink... i take around 2-3 mg of xanax a day and i drink often and don't have major problems...

i've had blackouts on ambien + alcohol, but my body has become pretty adjusted to the xanax

Hey there all you lovely P-Babblers :o)

I've had my own amnesiac blackouts just combining Amitriptyline, Serzone and 1 mg of Melatonin at bedtime, and I was told to by my p-doc. Heck, I've even had blackouts just trying to get outta bed in the morning ;o)
