OK. Here is my experience on Nardil. It took 5 weeks to kick in, then it was like magic for social anxiety and depression. It does have daytime lethargy (about 3pm), weight gain and sexual dysfunction as well as histamine (stuffy nose). I augmented with Adderall, which helped with all of these side effects, except the histamine. I had to get off because of an allergic reaction, but then that is the story of my life. Good luck.

Ross: What I did was carry the antidote for hypertension with me always. Then I would try a food at home to see how I reacted. I never had a problem with food. I found I could pretty much eat what I wanted. But I did have a reaction to combining Adderall with Parnate (although I was fine adding it to Nardil). Hope this helps. I'm a cheese junky. Giving up cheese would have been hard--but I didn't have to. Ask your pdoc about a script for the antidote and if you find yourself having the worst headache rising up the back of the head, take your blood pressure. It's good to know how to do this anyway.

Good luck.

Ross: Don't worry about bothering, you're not. I had the hypertensive reaction on Parnate which is known to cause more hypertensive reactions. I took the antidote. I don't remember the dosage. Anyway, the antidote brought my blood pressure back down, but I felt like crap for about 5 days. My hypertensive reaction came not from food but from amphetamines--which you have to be VERY careful about adding to MAOs.

I've been on Nardil for 5 years and eat everything with out side effects (37yr old Male)
Beer, booze, and many OTC drugs really mess me up, ie: flu like symptoms.
I have no problom at all with cheese!

Nardil/Parnate - better for males???

Why does it seem that those who have the most benefits from Nardil/Parnate, including relatively few food side-effects are male??? Is it my imagination?

Actually, I never had any reaction on anything I ate on Parnate, though I did stay away from pickled herring (a REAL sacrafice for the common American?!) But, cravings for sweets increased and found it real difficult to work out/excercise esp in the late afternoon.

No, some cheeses are safe: American, cottage, cream, and ricotta are all fine. Mozzarella cheese used on most pizzas has also been found to be harmless, and I've never heard of a confirmed hypertensive reaction to pizza (although it could happen if it was some sort of exotic pizza with sharp cheeses on it). Cheddar is the most common cheese that is unsafe with MAOIs.

It's more important to remember that certain drugs interact unfavorably with MAOIs. Over-the-counter decongestant pills such as pseudoephedrine should be avoided.

If you want my "short list" of foods and drugs that interact with MAOIs, you can search the Psycho-Babble archives.

> is there daytime sedation?

Sometimes, especially in the afternoon.

> how effective is it on social anxiety? as effective as they say?

Yes.

> weight gain?

Frequent.

> is a TID dosing the right trick?

There's no trick. It doesn't really matter how many times a day you take Nardil. Most people need a total daily dose of at least 60 mg, although occasionally 45 mg is enough.

> how about hypertensive reactions? anyone have any and what did they do about it? nifidipine? what dose?

10 mg. The best way to take it is probably to bite it in half and then swallow it (it's a gelcap). You can check your BP and take another 10 mg if it's not going down (ask your doctor how often you should do this). It's a good idea in general to monitor BP after taking nifedipine because it can cause a "crash." It's important to drink plenty of water if you need to take nifedipine; dehydration increases the risk of problematic low blood pressure.

I'm not sure what Lorraine meant about "histamine" side effects. I've never heard of any effect of Nardil on histamine receptors. If her stuffy nose was a side effect, it was an idiosyncratic one -- congestion or stuffy nose is not a documented side effect of Nardil.

I think that women may be more susceptible to weight gain from MAOIs; certainly, women are more likely to be bothered by weight gain. AFAIK, men and women are equally likely to benefit from MAOIs. Atypical depression, for which MAOIs are often the only thing that works, is more common in women than in men.
