Iam on 30 mg of remeron. Iam thinking of asking for 45 or 40 mg.I feel slow alot on 30 mg, like I have only so much energy. Boy am I lazy! Iam also on 2.5 mg of zyprexa but Ima quitting that because I cant afford it anymore. Would increasing dose of remeron increase my energy too much? I dont want to become anxious (I tried paxil and prozac and one of the start-up effects was agitation and extreme anxiety, I dont want that. )Is a remeron a serotonin booster at higher levels? Please info.

At the higher levels remeron is thought
to be more of a norepinephrine booster.
Anecdotally there is less sedation at around 45mg.
It can make you a little anxious, but remeron
has something built into it to block a serotonin
anxiety receptors, so that kicks in some more at
the higher doses too.I wouldn't be afraid of tinkering with raising
the dose to 45 mg. You can even go to 60 in some
rare cases. If it doesn't pan out, drop it to 30. It
was my personal experience that I was less drowsy
at 45 mg and less depressed.
Remeron did make me a hair more anxious
at the higher dose. But that was me.....regards,
john

How long have you been taking Remeron? Remeron helped my depression, if you don't respond to 30mg I think you/your pdoc should raise the dosage. You will notice when dose is too high. I can only talk for myself but a too high dosage makes me stressed and anxious. It is said to affect serotonin, but that doesn't seem to be the case for me.

It affects serotonin in a few ways:- it blocks a serotonin receptor that causes
anxiety (the 5-ht2 family)- there is an indirect interaction with
a norepinpehrine path which can "accelerate"
serotonin firing in an area of the brain.
This can cause a bit of the anxiety, but
also offset the tiredness and improve the
depression symptoms. The SSRI meds block the re-uptake of serotonin
so are working in a tottally different manner. This is what makes Remeron such a unique med.
They have derivatives of Remeron in research
that I read about that remove the anti-histamine
sedation property and would make it potentially
more of a "clean" anti-depressant.-john

I don't want them to remove that sedation property, It makes me fall asleep at night :)

I found Remeron to be much less sedating at the higher dose (45mgs). But it was much more helpful for my depressive symptoms and sleep at the lower doses (15-30mgs). I'm real hyper-sensitive to meds though so I may not be the best gauge. I don't remember experiencing any anxiety at the higher dose though, it's been awhile since I've taken it.

I was on 15mg/day of Remeron for depression with some agitation. The somnolence wore off after the first week. But some drug induced mania hit on day nine. Never had that before. Bizarre enough to ditch Remeron right then. It is mentioned in the insert. Do watch for it. I was just feeling the AD effect of Remeron then, also. Frustrating. Went on a 5mg. Zyprexa trial. I am staying with this Zyprexa for a bit. No agitation, good antidepressant, and good sleep. I felt relief immediately with it also. Guess it was time for a new approach. After years with good results on several ADs, I now get more side effects than anything else from them.
