Meds not working?U Deserve Treatment!GOTO EMERG!!!

Posted by jay on October 29, 2001, at 3:16:05

I posted this on another message, but I think this is of DIRE importance. We who are getting treatment for mental health problems seem to ALWAYS be treated as second-class patients. AS IF suicide is some how not as deadly as cancer or a heart attack!

After many years of treatment, as well as being on the other side of the helping field, suicide and mental illness are at EPIDEMIC rates. What we need is a 'sea-change', to start being aggressive (or better, assertive) in DEMANDING care, and not letting the medical community shun us.

Andrew Solomon in Noonday Demon say's it quite well, in that the hospital should NOT be a last resort, but a place we should feel free to go WHENEVER we feel needed. I know this is very tough for Americans in particular, because of your for-profit medical system, but be forward and direct in your needs. The U.N. and Amnesty International directly point out health-care IS A RIGHT..period!

EVERY single person on this planet deserves good and proper medical care, not just those who can afford it.
Go through as MANY doctors as needed until you get what you want, and a treatment you feel good about. DON'T SETTLE for second best....don't settle for just feeling 50 percent fine. You are undervaluing yourself and your rights.

If you are having a rough time, again, don't be afraid to goto emergency, or get admission to the hospital...and don't BE SHY about it. Demand another doctor..and another...and another...you and all of us owe it to ourselves! This is the 21'st century for gawwds sake...not the 18th! We have amazing strides in technology...in medicine....and the level and quality of care MUST keep stride! Rattle the cage, demand, and you might really surprise yourself.

YOU are worth it...YOU deserve it...WE ALL DO!

I think most of us people here are pretty aggressive about our treatment...pain can be a very effective motivator. We just can't find meds that work (as the title of your post suggests). Banging on hospital doors and switching doctors continuously dosen't seem to result in new miracle drugs being thrown at us, unfortunately.

Yeah, I've been wondering for a long time now why there is 'treatment-resistant' depression? What is it that is so resistant. The meds? The condition? OR are the problems of a psychological nature and the doc is just trying to shove meds down our throats when what we need is ideas, talk and/or non-chemical solutions?
Just a philosophical pondering....

True, but there are still many who get access to a very little selection of meds we have. Many docs are benzophobic, many don't like drug "cocktails". There are MANY add-on treatments, and we should not be limited by one or a couple of pdocs suggestions.

I've encountered many situations where a pdoc is so egotistical, they think any idea that is slightly 'unorthodox' is heresy. Throwing a person a script for Prozac, telling them to stay on it for two months and then come back, to me is irresponsible and cruel, in particular if the Prozac just *doesn't* work, and or makes things worse.

That is all I am really getting at. There are still many meds that doctors are prejudiced against. It is cruel to deny us access, for the most part.

I honestly think a part of it is pdocs egos preventing them from being creative and sensitive to our individual needs. There are still a ton of good meds out there that many pdocs look at you in horror if you ask about, and many who think that one little antidepressant will do the trick.

I think a pdoc is like a coach, and you need to have faith in that person, knowing they will support you 24/7, and won't let up until they see signs of improvement from you. They have to stop treating us like children, and realize that the MD diploma on their wall doesn't make them God. With a PDR, many people could likely prescribe quite a few of the psych meds for themselves, yet pdocs make it out to be some "magical" formula.

My basic belief is don't take crap, and go to any means needed to find the attention we deserve. It doesn't mean we will have a "cure", far from it, but at least we can get a better grasp on our symptoms.

hi. i would feel more free to admit myself to a hospital if they didn't force certain meds on me. I stayed at a hospital for 1 month earlier. I admit myself because a medication was making me worse and I felt suicidal. Constant mind torture. I was doing better being off the old med (effexor) but then afterwards I was put on a new med (celexa) and I was becoming progressively worse and worse to the point of constant mind torture once again. And I had no choice between taking or not taking the med. I felt like escaping from the hospital. I live in Canada by the way. It was quite the horrible experience. for others it would be good to admit themselves since most dont deal with worsening of depression on medication. But for me it has been hell.

I just wanted to say I am sorry if I tried to make some *sollution* sound easy. Farrrrrrrrr from it, and there is no easy answer...as much as I have BEGGED..as we all have and are. What my point was, more like a wish, that the medical community would treat us the same way as a person who has a deadly, acute, chronic illness. Not to put down other illness, but people with "physical" illness (i.e. visible) get all sorts of government programs, social programs, etc, etc.

We are *lucky* if we can even pay for the poor treatment we get, never mind the medications and therapy! So....that's my rant.....really..

Hi:

I live in Canada too...good day eh!..heh. I am surprised that if the Effexor or Celexa didn't work out, they didn't add another med(s). I don't even believe you have to be bipolar to take other meds too. I think just because of the complexity of our depression, often add-on meds can work.

Have you asked your doctor about adding other meds? There are many others to try. I too have had problems with Celexa and Effexor, but the addition of a few other meds has helped quite a bit.

If you are not happy with your current doc, don't be afraid to go to another. Or, ask around and try to find a doc who is open to liberal medication treatment.

all the AD's i've tried made me worse. So I really dont like the idea of adding meds. If I am on two meds and I feel worse then I wont know what's causing it. So I rather try one thing at a time.

and i'll have two new pdocs soon.
