Hi, new to the board here. I have what might appear to be an ignorant question, however I don't mean it to be.
How do you go about getting long term disability due to depression, etc? I'll get into my story later (cause it's a loooooooong one) but I was just curious for those of you that are on disability due to your illness.
Thanks so much for your replies!

Anne listed the THE site for govt info on SSDI and SSI...has a 'test' you can take to see what you qualify for and everything. It was/is a very thorough site. Here is another one that is interesting: http://www.severe.net/
Many people commented when I started the process that the odds were I would not be approved first time through. I thought it would be ok, as that would show I wasn't so or sick...Then, before I knew it (six months), the retro payments were in my account and every month I get a electronic deposit...I have had no complaints about anything or anyone, except perhaps, the forms and how difficult they were, for me, to fill out. It was going back over all the things I had done, what I had lost the ability to do, reliving the past, that made it so difficult. It is difficult when experiencing depression or mania or side effects from medication trials, to be very coherant.
I highly recommend having a medical advocate. You can have someone help you. If you don't have anyone, the SS office will help you. I dont know how other states do, but the representative I dealt with locally and at the state office in WA were excellent. Plus I saved 25-30% by not involving an attorney at the start. However, after first denial, I think I would have brought an attorney on board...to represent me, because it would have been very hard to do it for myself.

I did use an attorney simply because I was unable to fill out forms. My doctors were very cooperative and I was approved in 4 months on the first try. I spoke to my attorney on the phone for about an hour, signed some papers and spoke briefly to a SSDI rep (on the phone) who then spoke to my husband. I'm trying to remember the name of the firm- they only deal with SSD, it started with an A- sorry. Best of luck- Judy
