For those with anxiety conditions that are pretty constant, what meds do you take that work??
Please don't post an abstract article or tell me what you THINK works or what is proven by the FDA.
I am looking for responses from people who actually have anxiety and have found something that works for them-be it herbal, chemical or behavioural.

Sulpiride (& Promazine) is the only drug to help with my s. phobia, reducing symptoms to a tolerable level. It also helps with obsessive/anxious ruminations. It's not the answer but it's better than nothing. I've only ever had complete relief on SSRIs but the effects were short-lived. Lamictal was good for a while too.

You might ask your doc about Neurontin. It helps with my s.p. Also Klonopin works real well for that too.

On the behavioral side of things, look into something called Chi Gong (also Qi Kong and various other Americanizations of it's speeling). It is the reflective/meditative side of Tai-Chi. There are many websites and books dedicated to it. Practicing Chi-Gong led me to a much more peaceful mindeset which allowed me to get past a lot of the anxiety problems I was having. It gave me a much more peaceful state of mind.
It is very easy to practice and can take as little as 15 minutes a day but usually around 30 minutes is best. Do a little research on the web - it may help you ease some of the anxiety.
Also, some klonopin helped me the most in times of extreme anxiety/panic attacks.

I also suffer from panic and gad anxiety with depression and sleep disorder. I got hooked on ghb, which is about the best thing for anxiety and sleep disorder. Shit when im on g, ill run naked through the streets (not literlally), but when not, if the phone rings i start to panic.
I wouldnt suggest taking g, very addictve. Med wise, remeron, xanax, work so good for anxiety and sleep. Also i added desipramine to augment sedation from remernn and gives me a nice lift. But im still not totally social withough g. Zoloft may help or neuronitin. ALthough before g and meds, i drank alot, which was a acute cure for social anxiety. stay away from caffiene, stimulants, and such.

Thank you very much. I started out on an MAOI 12 years ago when all my symptoms first appeared. It was Manerix/Aurorix which has very little interaction with food or drugs. I'm not worried much about food interactions because I don't eat most of the foods on the list for MAOI's anyway.

ssri's seem to make my anxiety worse. So much so that I can't take them at all. I've never tried Lamictal. How is it for weight gain?? I've never heard of Promazine, what is it??

I do have Klonopin but if I take it every day, I get nasty withdrawal if I stop. I try not to take it much. Does Neurontin cause weight gain??
I am very uncomfortable with meds that cause weight gain. Being overweight makes my social phobia worse so it's kind of a "catch 22"

Sounds like a good idea Chris. Couldn't hurt anyway. I do yoga already but it doesn't do enough. I take klonopin seldom because of the fear of addiction. I've had withdrawals before and I can't stand it.

I once talked to a pdoc about Seroquel and she said that it isn't the right one for me. She said that an anti-psychotic wouldn't help my particular symptoms. I don't have her as a pdoc anymore........of course.
I take klonopin prn already. It's just not a constant enough "cure"
I'll look into the seroquel again though.

YOu're the second person to recommend Neurontin. I've been reading about it and it sounds like it's worth a try. I'll have to find me a doc and get some of these scripted out to me.

I have heard a few here say it did-but I have never gained any on it (unlike Depakote!).

Two words. BZD's and neurontin together. Try all of the BZD's and see that they all have a different degree of side effect. Ativan is what I use along with neurontin to moderate the ativan going in and out of my system.

Well, that's quite a few rec's for neurontin. HOw is it for weight gain? Fatigue? All the crappy side effects I'm used to from meds??

Some report weight gain. I've had it the opposite way tho'; I'm having trouble @ the mo' keeping my weight up. It can be quite an activating drug & so could theoretically worsen anxiety.

It's an old, mild anti-psychotic used primarily as a sedative in the UK. Similar in structure to Chlorpromazine. I had an amazing reaction to it; 30% (but no more) remission within 2 hours of taking a 25mg pill. Unacceptable side-effects (EPS, paranoia, short half-life...) made me switch to Sulpiride which, whilst not lifting my mood much, provides consistent, smooth relief from s. phobia.

Without question Xanax is an ass-whooper when it comes to anxiety. Problem is I didn't find it to be long term solution. Neurontin made me sleep and feel lethargic. Klonopin is very good for anxiety but makes me feel like my memory is gone. Lamictal works well if you get the dose right which I'm working on now. Right now I'm thinking Lamictal + Effexor or a Benzo.

I have a brother who I think fits that
description well and appears to be doing much
better since taking Effexor SR for about a year now.
Little desire for Klonopin prn anymore he reports.I have primary SP very severe (untreated)
and find effexor too anxiety provoking for me,
though I didn't add serzone those years ago which
i'd try now.I was surprised but it's possible that GAD patients
may in fact respond well to s + n agonists in spite
of the NE effect. Who understand it all really?
Anyway - reports aside (suggesting effexor), my
brother did well with effexor but not Prozac
or Paxil.I think Paxil could often work well actually, especially
for females.It knocked out my anxiety for for SP was a clear

In terms of generalized anxiety disorder, and things people have found that help, I'm curious to hear what kind of relationship people with this disorder have with caffeine. I've suffered with anxiety on and off. for the longest time I thought that if I could just give up the caffeine that the problem would go away. I can only tolorate a few cups of coffee/tea a day. Until recently, about 2-3 hrs after I would drink it, I would have horrible anxiety, visual distubances, panic attacks, etc. I couldn't give it up because the depression was too intense. Now things have reversed. In the morning, when I get up, I'm horribly irritable until I get some caffeine in me, then I calm down. It's not unusual for me to be violently irritable when I wake up, but it *is* quite a change for the caffeine to calm me down with no resulting panic attack. I haven't had a panic attack in a month. I can't figure it out. Maybe the caffeine had nothing to do with it? Weird! I'm enjoying being panic free...but the worrying side of me keeps waiting for the shoe to drop--so to speak--and for the attacks to return.
So, what have people's experiences been regarding caffeine and anxiety/panic? Does it make a big difference? Is a few cups/day negligible or drastic?

Long time no hear. I wonder if it is the *other* meds you are taking that could be preventing the panic, but making you drowsy, leading to your coffee consumption?

I can't ingest any caffeine whatsoever. If I ask for a cup of decaf in a restaurant and they fake it, I can tell about 20 minutes after I"ve finished the cup. I can't tolerate it at all.

Caffeine bad. Can't tolerate coffe or tea unless it's decaf. It makes me feel really sick. A little caffeine in some choloclate is okay as long as I don't eat too much at one time.

Hey Mitch...I've been out of town for a while. At the suggestion of friends I went on a road trip to see some buddies. With the depression and anxiety, I didn't want to go, but once I got on the road, I felt better. Sometimes when I'm depressed, getting out is like going to the gym: I never want to do it, but once I'm done I feel better. Maybe that's why the anxiety has been better? For the first time in two years I went out and did something fun and enjoyed it like a normal person. The first few days were a struggle, but after a while it was like I forgot I was depressed. Well, right now I'm not on meds. I've made an appointment to go to the Amen Clinic in California in December. That's where they do the SPECT scans of the brain and then medicate based on the scan. I've heard both good things and bad things about the place. I'll give you guys a full report when I get back. If *they* can't find a med that doesn't actually make me feel worse, then I'm going to give up on psychopharmacology (at least until it evolves past the guinnea pig merry-go-round stage of its developement; I can't take trying one wrong med after another...worse than no meds).But I know what you mean about drinking more coffee on meds. When I take SSRIs, I need to drink about 6-7 shots of espresso/day to counter the fatigue and sleepiness. After a while the caffeine stops working. Now that I'm off Paxil, I'm down to 1-2 cups a day (and down from 180lbs to 158 lbs--yea!!). But guess what? You're right! When I was on Paxil, I drank enormous amounts of caffeine, but didn't have one panic attack!!

I know what you mean. for a while, even decaf coffee would get my mind racing and panic would soon ensue. The lame thing was I knew, every time I would drink it, that a panic attack was around the corner, but I couldn't *not* drink it because the depression without it was too severe. Does your sensitivity to caffeine cycle? I mean, can you tolorate a little bit sometimes while at other times you can't tolorate any? That's how I am. Right now I'm panic free. I don't know why. I'm almost afraid to ask...don't want to jinx it!!
