prozac side effects

Posted by Lini on August 22, 2001, at 12:33:14

definitely feeling better from 20 mg/4 weeks on prozac. i hope the stability lasts! i have had a few minor problems from the side effects, specifically the heartburn and sleep problems and less so, the yawning and memory issues "did i just take my pill?". i know everyone here has been around the block a few times with different meds - any suggestions i can take to my primary care physician?

thanks!

I was on Prozac for years, and yes the reflux/heartburn can really get bad. You could try adding some famotidine (Pepcid) or something similar about an hour before you go to bed and stay away from food 3-4 hrs before you go to sleep. The lessened reflux might help you sleep better. You could also try the new lower-dose 200microgram melatonin at bedtime as well. You could try both of these first before you go see your GP.

Thanks Mitch - I hadn't thought about the correlation between when I eat and when I go to sleep (I had never experienced heartburn in my pre-prozac life!) On that subject - when did you find was the best time to take your dose? I usually take it a few hours before bed with food (or else I get nauseous)hence the heartburn. Recommendations?

thanks!

Try taking your Prozac in the morning with breakfast instead. When I started it at 20mg/day I just got nauseated for an hour or so and I always took it with coffee on an empty stomach. Food helped. If you still get the nausea try getting the 10mg tabs and take one with breakfast and the other one with lunch. If you have GERD or heartburn, food at bedtime is a real NOT thing to do!
