Prolactin hormone level and bromocriptine ?

Posted by ben on August 14, 2001, at 13:52:36

Does anyone knows how the hormone prolactin affects mood. I read of hyperpolactinaemia causing psychiatric illnesses (like depression..).
What are other symptoms of a hyperprolactinaemia (for men) ? Bromocriptine (Parlodel) is used to tread this as well as cases of depression. Is there any relationship and could it be worthfull to check the blood level of prolactin ?

Meds that antagonize dopamine (D2) receptors (such as antipsychotics) will tend to increase prolactin hormone secretion. Dopamine (D2) agonists (which I think bromocriptine is) should reduce Prolactin secretion as other DA agonists do such as pergolide and pramipexole. DA agonists are sometimes used to augment antidepressants.

I don't know about the symptoms of prolactinemia in men, but I can tell you that I have had prolactinemia for about a decade and only suffered post-partum depression after my third child (which is persistent they think due to an underlying depressive disorder). Years ago they changed the normal range upward. I was on bromocriptine for a year or so while trying to become pregnant and it made no difference to my fertility nor did I feel any effects other than a chronically stuffy nose. I think the brand name I used was Parlodel which if I remember correctly had been a source of debate within the FDA and the medical community. They were thinking of pulling this drug off the US market due to the association of some cancers. I don't know if this was actually done or not. If you go for a prolactin level it is important to get it as soon as possible after waking, abstaining from food, drink and smoking.

Hi,

I had prolactinemia from taking Risperdal, but when I added bromocriptine my level went back to normal. I too have heard that prolactinemia can be a marker for depression, but I don't remember where I read it -- do you know? That said, I've improved a great deal with Risperdal, even with the prolactinemia, so that doesn't seem to be true for me.

Ben,

To the best of my knowledge, there is no association between hyperprolactinaemia and depression.

Bromocriptine occassionally helps with depression and also lowers prolactin. However, bromo lowers prolactin by acting on the turbofindibular (spelling?) dopamine pathwath, but if it acts to ameliorate depression it does so via the mesocortical-limbic dopoamine pathway.
