Feeling Awful on Lamictal-Should I Stop?

Posted by Kingfish on August 10, 2001, at 9:21:46

Hi All! I started Lamictal a few weeks ago (added it to current mix of Prozac, Topamax and Neurontin). Felt fine, except for light headaches, until this week when I went up to 50 mg. I thought I had the flu, but it's lasted all week, so I think it's the med.

I'm having bad headaches, very tired, aching limbs, nausea, and am itching although no rash has appeared. I just feel terrible.

I go up to 75 mg in a couple of days.

I know I should call my pdoc but I wanted to post here first and see if anyone else had had a similar experience and if it went away.

Thanks!

- K.

Call your doc today, of course. He may suggest you drop back to 25 for awhile. You never know, it might be the flu, and if you try upping the dose again later (maybe more slowly) you won't have the same problems. I got a rash on my first go-round, then restarted more slowly and had better luck, but I seem to get some benefit from just 25 mg.

Hi K. I think Hattree is right concerning a slow tritration. The symptoms you mention I have heard about from other people on the board (fatigue, nausea, etc.) Since you were doing fairly well at 25mg, I wouldn't stop the lamictal, just go back to that dose until your mild headache is resolved. I think there is a good chance that the side effects will go away, at least you will have a better chance of that if you increase very slowly.

Good luck,

Shelli

hey kingfish,

the very first day I took 25mg of Lamictal I had a sore throat later that night.
Didn't think anything of it until I accidentally skipped a day of taking it and I felt a little better. Well,
then it dawned on me it could be the med. I stopped it immediately and guess what...the sore
throat went away. My pdoc said this med has a
very low side effect profile.....figures I would
be one to get side effects. Seems I'm hypersensitive to meds. Best wishes in your
future and stop the Lamictal.

Thanks all! I'm calling my pdoc. (n/p)
