ATTN! MITCH!!! PLEASE READ THIS!!!

Posted by Twisterella on August 10, 2001, at 12:45:37

hi- i read some of your posts from june about your deja vu feelsing and i beleive you may have alos posted about dream flashbacks??
well i know what you are going through- your symptoms sound like mine
- it started back in november- this is what happens to me:
1. my head feels funny and i get flashes of familar "memories" in my minds eye-
except i cant quite place what they are , they just feel familiar,
like maybe fragments of an old dream, i get freaked out and while all of this happens
(in the course of about 20 seconds) my heart races, my stomach hurts, kind of like nausea, but more like a pain,
and i sweat alot, after my head throbbs so bad for like 20 min., well i went to my shrink, then a neuro,
i got blood work done, mri, 3 eegs (2 were 24 hour) and a cat scan- my neuro said i looked fine, well after that these "spells"
(thats what I always have called them) went away, and if they came back, i could stop them myself from coming, but recently i have been getting them really bad in my sleep,
and i cant stop them, they wake me up (but i really dont get the headaches anymore), I am not on any kind of medication , i never have been, these spells came out of the blue,
i was just wondering since you sound so much like me, how are you doing?? i know another person, i met online, who has the same symptoms as you and i , he also, has been checked up by a neuro,
and hes physically healthy, but hes not on any medication, i feel worse right now than i ever have, and i have read that if you have TLE and dont get hep for it,
it can cause you to go insane, im not sure if thats true, but i hate feeling like no one understands what is wrong with me!!also i have otherthings happening,
that im not sure i can explain, like i get emotions and they feel familia, but i cant place them, its so hard to try and explain. i feel like im losing it!!!! maybe you could give me some insight.
thanks
jenny

Jenny,

What you need to do (and what I *should* do at some point) is get a sleep study (polysomnogram) with an EEG analyzed by a neuro. I know you mentioned several EEG's that were evidently negative. My Mom had nocturnal (nighttime) generalized (grand mal) seizures that she had no recollection of. You are evidently conscious during these episodes. So you possibly could be having partial seizures. Another possibility is you are experincing phenomena related to *auras* that often precede migraine headaches. I wouldn't consider any of my symptoms "dream flashbacks", more like derealization feelings. What did your pdoc think of all of this?

first of all- thank you for the response-
my doctors, all of them, think its anxiety, but when i first told them of the symptoms, they initally thought it was TLE, but now they say its most probably not.
if it was TLE do you think I would be able to stop the seizure???i can actually stop them from happening (during the day) also Im 28 years old- anxiety disorder runs through my family on both sides, and there is no history of seizures, i dont have a tumor or any malformations on my brian.....but my mother was diagnosed with schitzophrenia, which i heard was some how seizure related??? maybe thats just crap, and maybe i am just too neurotic-
also my "dream flashes" dont feel like derealization, but im not exactly sure what DR is, The flashes are so fast, and they feel really familiar, and i cant controll when they happen, it feels like a very subtle "spell" ---i am going to call my neuologist on monday, he still wants me to take a BEAR exam to see if it may be MS.- well whatever they are , these spells have diminshied in frequency, compared to when i first had one in November-I was having 2 and 3 a day wehn they first happend, and after I was told i didnt have a brain tumor, they completely disappeared for 3 months.
are you on any medication right now??? and are you still having the symptoms???
thanks again
jenny

Jenny,

I have bipolarII, and am on Neurontin, Depakote, and Klonopin (all low-dose). They definitely help-esp the klon and the Neurontin. My symptoms are mostly mixed anxiety/depression/hypomania. I tend to have the "derealization" episodes whenever I am hypomanic. Right now I am somewhat depressed, but it is that time of year again! It is good you are working with a neuro that seems interested in getting to the bottom of it.

A "BEAR" exam? That is a new thing to me. What is it? I would follow what he says.

good luck,
Mitch

i think I also have something like bipolar, what is hypomania?? if you have the time, i would be really interested in knowing more about all of your symptoms, especially if you could describe them to me in great detail, just to compare notes...i have a feeling, i have a major chemical imbalance going on, im just so afraid of medication, im afraid it will make me worse, or not myself.....do the spells that i have told you about sound like anything you have expierenced before?? maybe i havent gone into enough detail, but i would like to read anything you have to offer.

Well what did they say?

i assume pdoc is a refrence to some sort of a doctor?? (if not then youll have to explain better) all of my doctors, therapists, and shrinks think its anxiety related (all of my symptoms) they said they felt they had ruled out seizures, and thats fine, but i dont understand why my symptoms sound so much like tle?? especially the "psycic" symptoms, the flashes of familiar events and not knowing or not rmembering what they are and the deja vu......the doctors also said something about anxiety affecting your temporal lobes so sometime TLE and anxiety mimic each other....

Sounds like they may be onto something. I am surprised that they haven't prescribed anything to help prevent them. Perhaps since they are episodic and spaced fairly far apart they are trying to pick it up with an EEG and any medications could suppress it and they would have a hard time locating from where it is coming from.

Hi guys I had these feelings too for a while and I didn't know what was wrong with me. I have feelings of deja vu daily. I sometimes listen to songs that I never heard before and I feel I know what they say before they say it and I can sign along it's weird. I also get these weird flashback dreams and can't recall having them the next day. I usually think of a friend one day that I never thought of in a while and end up talking to him the very same night. I have really bad headaces and it feels like there is something heavy in my head. I think an acid trip that I had months ago brought on these symptoms. I will never do any drugs like acid every again. I think these problems have a lot to do with my anxiety problems. When I am on an ssri I usually don't think of these problems.
I am going to see about going to a neuro I really need some tests done. Also, What is TLE?? I'd appreciate some feed back, thanks

funny that you mention acid- i was a heavy acid user, and the last trip i took landed me in the psych ward for like a month- i was released and diagnosed with an anxieyt disorder, they doped me up on an drug called deseryl (its no longer used) but if you read my very first post, i mention that i know another peron, who is going through the same thing, he was also an lsd user...conincidence???????
maybe
but my lsd days were over and done almost 9 years ago....
so im not sure- maybe were all having flashbacks brought on by anxiety????
i think were all pretty much clueless, maybe we all ate off the same batch of bad acid???
ok that was a bad joke
sorry

also dont get all freaked out, but tle is a suble form of epilepsy, it only affects one part of your brain, your temporal lobe, (hence T(temporal) L(lobe) E(epilepsy)and you usually dont go unconscious and the symptoms mimic anxiety alot of the times....
mind you im not a doctor, nor am i any expert, i just read a few books about it, but i can share my minimal knowlege, probably talking to a doctor would be best though.

Jenny, AVR,

Well I have tried acid too before, but that has been a LONG time ago. I suppose if you had a bad trip on it and it resulted in hospitalization or it triggered panic disorder then the symptoms may be some form of PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). If the experience was perceived by you to be so traumatic that it had the intensity of experiencing a bad car wreck, a shooting, etc. that could be it. The "dream flashbacks" could be some sort of memories being replayed of the bad experience. The only thing that doesn't seem to fit is the lack of knowledge that the phenomena is related to the "bad trip". I haven't read much on these sorts of things, I guess.

I have thougth about PTSD before , but the sympotms dont seem to fit...For me the best way to explain the "flashbacks" is ,I will be wathcing tv, or just doing normal everyday things and its like when you have a dream and you cant remember it in the moring, but you have the "feeling " of the dream, you know you had a dream, but you couldnt ever explain it, well I get these littleflashes in my minds eye of like a scene and they last for a fraction of a second, but i couldnt tell you what the hell they are, but they feel famailair (like have I thought about this before or have I dreamt that before , but I still dont know what the hell it is),when i have a spell its a bit different, its almost like i am wide awake and I start to dream for like 20 seconds, i know where I am and i can see everything just like normal, but in my head sometimes it feels like my surroundings have changed, liek it feels like my house is changed but i see everting normally, the spells dont get this far anymore while I am awake, i can stop them, but sometimes in my sleep I cant controll them...
is any of this ringing a bell for anyone??? oh yeah, i also get these flashback things alot more when I am stressed out, and I stil lhave my visuals from my lsd days, my visuals are more intense when I am anxious.

J.

That really sounds like temporal lobe issues for sure. Especially with the "dreaminess" and the deja-vu. I think your neuros are onto it. Since you have been relatively symptom free of late may explain why they haven't attempted to give you anti-epilepsy meds. When you begin to have episodes is when they probably want to "wire-you up" again and see where it is coming from. Then they can better diagnosis it and treat it. Stress can provoke seizures for sure. There was a student in my statistics class in college that had his first seizure in the class whenever we had a substitute for a sick teacher and we were close fo finals. Also, my Mom would tell me that she had to shield her eyes from the sun coming through picket fences in the morning riding the bus to work or it made her feel "funny".

This has happened to me for years, long before I started any medications for depression. I just figured that a smell or something visual triggers the memories in that part of my brain. I recognize them as being past dreams ( I have always been a vivid dreamer with excellent dream recall my whole life). Thought you might find this interesting.....

Antidepressants have had no effect on these "episodes" and no, I have not used LSD. Since I have no physical symptoms associated with this recall I have just learned to enjoy them. They don't happen very often, sometimes in bunches and then not for a while.

Hallucinogen Persisting Perception Disorder. I used acid about 4 times and see trails etc., so if you were a heavy user, I'd check out this site http://www.hppdonline.com
