WELLBUTRIN

Posted by Domonique on August 4, 2001, at 14:51:00

I have only been on Effexor for a short time, but cannot tolerate the insane sweating, and dizzy feeling. because I was able to read about the side effects here (thank you) I have decided to stop it before I get much more in my system.
After doing some research, it seems Wellbutrin may be the answer.
Any feed back that any of you care to share with me, will be truly appreciated.
does it work fairly quickly?
Side effects?
Are you happy with it?
Do you take it with something else?
Comments appreciated. Thanks.

I had really horrible side-effects from Wellbutrin the first week I was on it (insomnia, tremors, nightmares, everything...) They did disappear after one week though. Starting with a low dose (100mg/die) and combining it with a benzo initially was very helpful the third time I tried to initiate it (and succeeded). In any event, the drug is worth a try. It has a unique pharmacological profile. Nothing else has worked for my PMS symptoms even though Prozac is supposed to be so much better (it was not).

Wellbutrin gave me panic attacks.....but, that's just my case. I'm now on Zoloft and Trazodone.

i'm on it and like it. it was, however, pretty tough going at first. the only thing tougher was when i tried effexor (grin). i was anxious and couldn't get control of it on the effexor. it wasn't so much anxious as irritable when i initially went on the wellbutrin, and i felt like it wasn't something i couldn't tough out, which is what i felt after giving the effexor a good 5 week try. i felt drugged on other meds that i tried, but i never have felt that with the wellbutrin.

i take it by itself, but i have taken it with ativan in the early stages when the irritability was tough. i don't take ativan now. i take sleeping aids from time to time.

what "worked quickly" at first was the feeling of increased energy and being effective doing tasks. that was marvelous! it wasn't until probably 3 months into it that i all of a sudden noticed a calming/anti-depressant effect. that's been great. i don't smoke anymore and drink less caffeine probably because the wellbutrin provides that extra ooomph i would get otherwise from smoking or caffeine. exercising helps handle too much energy from time to time it just builds up in me.

side effects included irritability, rage (the first 4-5 weeks mostly), constipation (easily remedied), and insomnia when taking the dose too late in the day.

i'm very happy with it.

Depends on your particular "problem". For your basic uncomplicated depression, Wellbutrin is a good alternative to those who have problems with SSRIs, especially sexual side effects on higher doses. Wellbutrin is not, however, a panacea, it causes some side effects as well. Most predominant are: chest pain, insomnia and anxiety-panic-aggitation states. These can be mediated by commitant use of a benzo or other mood stabilizer to "take the edge off" as I say. Though the question becomes a dichotomy, when so combined, Wellbutrin is highly effective as a mood lifter. Just watch out for the Pdocs that want to give you an AP like Depakote to mello you out. Wellbutrin has a very narrow therapeutic window. 400mg per day is really the maximum recommended dose (check other WB threads, or see SalArmy4me, he has some excellent resource material on-line). It does take a few weeks to get used to, but I like it overall, and have been using it for over 2 years.

like you, i was on an ssri (prozac/sarafem) for a short time...a month...the drug was great for my pmdd, but had terrible side effects for me....shakes, sexual side effect, wild dreams (didn't really mind those). so i did research too and decided on wellbutrin (with the doc's suggestion that i try it).

> does it work fairly quickly?

not as quickly as i'd like, had to take the edge off with klonopoin.

> Side effects?

headaches for 3 days when i increased the dosage. also, the rage factor...see my earlier posts in previous archives.

> Are you happy with it?

i'm almost finished my first month and am going to continue on.

good luck.

I've been taking Wellbutrin for...god, I think it's been more than two years now. I found it electrifying at first but the edge wears away (after months...). I just HATE the constipation and gas, and whoever said it is easily remedied, well, that doesn't apply to my constipation. I've missed work due to stomach pain. And I think the constipation has been getting progressively worse. Uugh...still the constipation is not bad enough to make me go off the Wellbutrin (however, I am trying to lower my dose).

i have been on wellbutrin for about two months now. for me, it kicked in immediately, and i felt incredibly energized. it also, however, aggravated my anxiety and panic for the first 6 or 7 weeks. ativan as needed seemed to help, although i liked the energy so much that i only took ativan when absolutely necessary. the edginess has decreased now, although i have just had a couple of weeks of anger/rage episodes. sounds bad, eh? it hasn't been too bad - its the only thing that has worked for me thus far. no other major side effects - some trouble with falling asleep and waking up early, headaches a little worse than usual, and a dramatic decrease in appetite and sugar cravings.

i was really suffering for a while and there was a thread on here a while back about this very subject. drinking lots of water and eating vegetables and stuff did not help. doing the metamucil-type stuff didn't help either (just made the gas worse, ya know). somebody said to take magnesium, and low & behold they were right. for me i just take 1 400mg capsule of plain magnesium in the morning. (i think whoever suggested it said to take more?? this works just fine for me.) mine is made by TwinLab. give it a shot. been there -terra

Super - Also, be sure to increase your water intake (at least 6-8 8oz glasses a day). As for the gas, Ovol™ (simethicone - Gas X™) works. You don't need the most expensive brand, just any product called simethicone. You also don't need Diovol or any other product with extra ingrediaents. The simethicone breaks the surface tension on those nasty gas bubbles and forms one big bubble (the little bubbles don't get trapped as easily, causing the pain and bloating). Then the big bubble scoots out at one time (preferably, not in an elevator - yes, it can be controlled, as much as the smaller ones). The simethicone is relatively safe (recommended for gassy babies), and stays outside the body (ie. within your intestines).

Good luck - Cam
