Finally got to see a pdoc, she says Wellbutrin makes anxiety worse (I have SP) so she is considering adding Zoloft or Celexa to my Wellbutrin. She knows my concerns about weight gain and sexual problems on SSRIs. I am losing weight on Wellbutrin, even on merely 100 mg/day so I am loathe to give it up.
What are the effects of taking both Celexa and Wellbutrin? What will the Celexa do that the Wellbutrin won't?
I know Wellbutrin is supposed to help prevent sexual problems normal with SSRIs, but I am wondering if taking both will prevent weight gain as well, and in fact, what the benefit of the Celexa would be.

Well, I'm on this mix with mixed results. I'd have to say that the Celexa has mellowed me out a bit. I'm less anxious and I'm more calm. The sexual side effects are less than when I was on Effexor alone. I see my pdoc today...
Also Wellbutrin is an SDRI (Selective Dopamine Reuptake Inhibitor.) It makes more dopamine more available for the brain. The Celexa is an SSRI (Selective Seratonin Reuptake Inhibitor) It makes more seratonin more available to the brain. So as I understand it the two drugs inhibit different chemicals....

Hi Joe,
I'm on Prozac + Wellbutrin ... I've tried Wellbutrin alone, but it didn't help my depression much; just gave me more energy (and sometimes anxiety, if I mixed it with too much coffee :) --Have you been on SSRIs before? Because I have LOST a lot of weight on SSRIs alone, without the Wellbutrin, in the past. So it could work that way for you, too.
Also, I THINK my pdoc said that Celexa has less sexual side effects than Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil and Effexor ... I think it's worth a try!
(By the way, I KNOW my pdoc said that Remeron and Serzone don't have sexual side effects, and are more sedating -- they may help with the anxiety from the Wellbutrin... it's something to talk to your doc about if the Celexa doesn't feel right.)
Good luck,

I have tried celexa for SP but it did not help.
It did not cause sexual problems like paxil did.
I am taking Neutontin for SP now and it works
very well. I have only been taking it for
a week. It works good for anxiety.
you may what to try Neutontin.

I have SP and dysthymia. I am taking Klonopin for the SP. I am taking Wellbutrin for the dysthymia but chest pains have forced me to cut back the dosage to 100 mg/day of the SR version. I really like it due to the appetite suppressant effects. Wish I could tolerate a higher dose.
Pdoc says Wellbutrin just makes anxiety worse so it is not a good drug for SP. I told her I was taking it for dysthymia, not SP. She wants to use Celexa for the dysthymia (I think) and then use Wellbutrin primarily to offset the sexual and possibly weight effects of the Celexa. I assume I will come out less anxious under this scenario or what is the point of adding the Celexa? Wellbutrin is an AD so it is not as if I have no AD right now. I am just wondering if an SSRI will do something for me emotionally that Wellbutrin will not. Will it make me less rejection-sensitive? Will it take the "edge" off Wellbutrin and let me go to a higher dosage? Or will it just neuter me and make me fat? The suspense....
This is the end of the thread.
