Thanks to all who responded to my thread about EffexorXR making me feel caffeinated to the point of feeling the shakes, and based on these symptoms, plus no let up in my anxiety and also your responses above, there's no doubt that I will ask my pdoc to taper me off the Effexor (shouldn't be too hard or long since I'm "only" at 75 mg, half the therapeutic dose), and onto an a-d that is the opposite, actually SEDATING, that I could take at night because I've developed extreme difficulty falling asleep at night (I'm on Zyprexa as a temporary solution for that). Plus a sedating a-d would probably help with both the depression and my continued anxiety, racing thoughts, etc. I need something to QUIET my mind.
From what I've read here, it sounds like Serzone and Remeron are both SEDATING (for most people). But do both of these have you waking up still feeling drowsy and tired, like a hangover type effect? I don't want that if I can avoid it.
And which other a-d's are known to be sedating?
What about Luvox (I also have obsessive and compulsive tendencies) - is that sedating?
Thanks, Janelle

Janelle,
Celexa was sedating and calming for me. Paxil is
supposed to have a more sedating effect as well.
Have you tried either of these?

Roo,
I have tried BOTH Celexa and Paxil!! In fact, I was on Paxil for many years before it either pooped out or just is not meant for the hypomania I had developed.
I NEVER EVER found Paxil sedating or calming, but a friend of my sister's found it too sedating.
I DID find Celexa to be sedating, so I took it at night, but it was not sedating enough to help me sleep and it caused me other side effects during the day that did not go away - headaches (which I RARELY get), foggy and heavy headed feelings and feeling detached and spacey. Had to taper off it.
Thanks for your response.

That's too bad, Janelle....what have you tried?
Have you tried a mood stabilizer?

Serzone was sedating for me, but I didn't sleep as well, which is odd considering that it's supposed to help with REM sleep. I have anxiety (since forever) and I'd say it was the best A-d I'd tried. I think I gained some weight on it tho (but not much, at the most 10 lbs). Drinking water instead of soda would've probably prevented it.

Roo - I just started a mood stabilizer, Lamictal, and am hoping & praying for the best. I will also be changing my a-d to a more sedating one because I really don't want to keep taking Zyprexa to sleep! Although it seems to help with my anxiety and obssesive, racing thoughts.
The pdoc thinks I will need BOTH the mood stabilizer and an SSRI a-d. The only reason I've pulled out of the depression to the extent I have (and I'm no means at the end of this dark tunnel) is due to my trials (though not 100% successful) with Celexa and EffexorXR, so that I've got some SSRI working on my brain, even if it's not the exact match!

I didn't feel drowsy on Remeron, but then, it wasn't really sedating at all for me. (By the time I got to 75 mg, I was taking the full dose in the morning.)

Mostly tricyclics. Doxepin, amitriptyline, and trimipramine are the most sedating ones; clomipramine and imipramine can be as well.

Remeron 7.5mg an hour before bedtime.

I would agree with Serzone. It was very mild for me though, but I may not have been at a high enough dose.

> Thanks, JanelleAsk your doctor about doxepin, I take 100 mgs at bedtime, I sleep very well. I have found that when I can get at least 7 hours of sleep, that I don't have that hangover effect.

That could backfire, especially for someone who can't afford to sleep in.

If you want to sleep, take a combination of Mirapex, Parlodel, Remeron, and Seroquel. :)
