Are benzos anti-depressants?

Posted by manowar on June 15, 2001, at 18:06:15

Am I imagining things or can benzos at a low dose have an anti-depressive effect? The reason that I ask is because the only times drugs have been helpfull with me is when I was also taking a benzo too.

I thnik they have, I am on low dose of medazepam and it has certain effect. It may also be that once you are free of anxiety (whoch is why I take it) things start to improve by itself. You feel less stress (caused by anxiety) and get more energy and have generally clearer mind. Also side effects are non - existing , although they may be addictive (that's what they say).

There are interesting clinical studies that showed benzos to be good antidepressants. They have also been shown to speed up the onset of action of antidepressants.

They can also cause or increase depression. It all depends on what underlying chemistry is at fault. It could be a miracle and it could be a nightmare. It will vary dramatically from one person to the next. But yes, benzos can be good antideppressants for some people. In my opinion, if it works, don't argue about it and don't worry about wondering why, just accept it and go with it and be happy you accidentally found something that works. I personally could care less what it is that works or how it works, just as long as it works.

My doctor told me that xanax or other drugs in the benzodiazepines family affect the central nervous system, and can make you calmer. I have taken xanax for over 12 years, since I suffer from panic disorder. I also suffer from major depression. The benzodiaxepines make me feel as if I have no energy, I have accepted this as a decent pay off to panic attacks, which put my life on hold. Benzodiaxepines are extremely addictive and if I would have known this 12 years ago, I might have tried other treatment options. I probably will have to go into drug rehab when I can no longer take xanax. I try not to think about this too much.

Life can be good just the way it is, for now!

Take Care,

Becky
