Paxil and Risperdal

Posted by EricaS on May 31, 2001, at 16:03:03

Hi, this is my first post to this board. I take 50 mg of Paxil and 2 mg of Risperdal daily and bedtime. But the Paxil makes me so sleepy and doesn't work well on my depression. I also grind my teeth on it and can't really laugh or cry... I'm just numb. It helps with the anxiety, though. The risperdal was given to me for having visual and aural hallucinations which have now gone away completely. Is anyone else on Risperdal and what are you on it for? I have heard it is also used for bipolar and personality disorders? When I talk to my doctor next I'm thinking of asking if I can try Celexa and Wellbutrin or Effexor since I've heard good things about them. Any and all comments welcome.

There are case studies using precisely Paxil and Risperdal.

O'Connor, Manjula MBBS, DPM, MMed (Geriatrics), FRANZCP. Silver, Henry MBBS, BMed Sci, DPM, FRANZCP. "Adding Risperidone to Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor Improves Chronic Depression." Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology. 18(1):89-91, February 1998:

"SG, a 39-year-old woman and business professional, presented in February 1995 with depression. She was tearful and sad, anorexic, had lost 7 kg in 2 months, experienced early and late insomnia and poor concentration, felt inadequate with low self esteem, feared people and criticism, and had suicidal thoughts. She responded well to sertraline 50 mg/day. Two subsequent relapses responded to paroxetine 20 mg/day and paroxetine 20 mg/day plus nortriptyline 10 mg/day and thioridazine 10 mg/day, respectively. In May 1996, she became severely depressed, felt worthless, extremely anxious, could not sleep, and had suicidal thoughts. Her employer telephoned that she was suicidal, extremely agitated, and aggressive. Treatment with nortriptyline 30 mg/day, paroxetine 30 mg/day, and alprazolam 0.5 mg/day produced little response after 4 weeks. In July 1996, risperidone 1 mg twice daily was added. One week later, she was much improved and returned to work. There were no side effects except for a mild tremor. Risperidone was discontinued after 3 weeks, and paroxetine 20 mg/day and nortriptyline 20 mg/day were continued. Three months later, she again became agitated. Risperidone was reinstated with immediate relief, which was sustained 2 weeks later."

Effexor XR seems to be ok for me. Risperdal was given to me for psychosis, it caused teeth grinding and debilitating leg cramps from hell! I was given it because I see things! Odd things. Either way, try the effexor XR, it may work for you, it doesn't for everyone, but it's worth a try.

My ex took risperdal for Borderline Personality Disorder, to help stoip the raging episodes and dysphoria. It really didn't do much except knock him out (suppose that was better than the raging!). He was on a pretty high dose and still tried to commit suicide once, so I guess that speaks to the learned and not biochemical basis of personality disorders, for what it's worth. But I know it's often prescribed for BPD. Zyprexa is also popular for personality disorders.

I also know a woman with ADHD who takes risperdal in conjuction with other meds.

So it appears to have many uses, like so many of these newer-geneeration drugs.

good luck!

Helen
