I really haven't heard of that complaint with Neurontin. But I'm sure its possible.

Just curious. Do you only take neurontin and if so, how are you finding it? My doctor has mentioned this drug and I'd like to get as much info as possible. He is talking about adding neurontin to an anti-depressant but if it can be taken alone and help depression, maybe this is the way I should go.
Let me know, if possible.
Thanks.

i've found it _very_ helpful with anxiety. I just
feel calmer with hardly any side effects. More
peaceful. I take it with prozac. I take 1800 mg's
a day (600 3 times a day)

I'd love to stop though, b.c. of the G.D. sexual side effects! I digress. The Neurontin is very helpful. It has a calming effect. I feel confident in social situations and when alone. It's subtle but effective.

sounds like we're in a similar boat--I take neurotin
and prozac, but eventually want to taper WAY down
on the prozac b/c of sexual side effects.Yeah, I noticed my nails have been really brittle
too, skin too, and, uh "down there" :-)

I'm on Neurontin and Selegiline as my AD. The Neurontin does provide "mood" support at high enough doses--for me this is just 900 mg a day. The Selegiline helps with cognitive functions, sexual functions (which I believe the Neurontin damps down), and motivation--in short it's a puppy uppper or activating drug. I think it takes a pretty sophisticated and confident pdoc to prescribe Selegiline tho. Its an MAO B inhibitor at low doses--so no dietary restrictions.

yeah, she's the one that suggested it. She thinks
it's possible to eventually go off the prozac and
just take the neurotin. I'm really hoping I can
do it. In the past, everytime Ive gone off on SSRI
my depression returns, but I've never just taken
a mood stabilizer alone.

Bissie, good luck :-)
Just curious--how long have you been taking meds
for depression? Does depression run in your family?
What meds have you taken and which ones did you
respond poorly to, and which ones did you respond
well to? I tend to respond better to the SSRI's
(of course! the ones with the notorious sexual
dysfunction!), and poorly to drugs like Wellbutrin
and serzone. (Haven't tried Effexor or Remeron yet).
I respond "ok" to the TCA disipramine, but not as
well as with prozac. Have taken meds off and on for
nearly 10 years, mainly on prozac. The mood stablilizer
is a new thing, only been doing that for 4 months or
so.

I have been on anti-depressants for about 8 years. i've gone off them a number of times but always get depressed again. like you, SSRI's have worked much better for me (very unfortunate b.c. i too have sexual side effects on all of them). yes, i have a family history of depression (mother -- had severe depression including suicide attempts). I've also tried Wellbutrin (had a seziure; had to stop it), Nortiptyline (sp?) (didn't work)and Remeron (didn't work on depression). Meds that have worked are Zoloft and Celexa. I've also tried Effexor (didn't try it long enough -- wanted to switch to zoloft which i knew worked b.c. i was in a bad depression and needed immediate relief). BTW, is Effexor an SSRI?
Neurontin is new for me too -- also about 4 months. i take 1600 mg. i really like it! god, i would be so grateful if it was enough so i could stop taking celexa and get my good sex life back. i miss it so much. i have a great boyfriend but our sex life is a little one-sided now if you know what i mean. i feel i'm missing out on a vital part of life.
thanks a lot for sharing with me. it really helps! bissie

Boy, I totally relate! have you tried taking a
drug holiday from the Celexa? I was on celexa for
awhile and that helped somewhat for me.
I think Effexor is somewhat of an SSRI, but not
quite. Did you have sexual side effects on it?
Thanks for sharing all your stuff with me too--it
does help.

When I took celexa, it took a couple of days of
not taking it before noticing a difference in bed.
The trade off was that I felt nauseous from withdrawal...

I have been taking Neurontin for a week or so now. My Doc put me on it to help with the withdrawel of coming off of Ativan. I am also on Paxil and Buspar. I have been on the other meds for 6 mnths now but since I started the Neurontin I have dry skin and I feel that it is causing me to be bloated when I take it at night. This water weight is driving me nuts!!! Anyone have the same problem or another med as a solution??? Thanx
