I have been taking Effexor XR for about 5 months and am experiencing severe muscle and skeletal pain. My psychiatrist says my arthritis (which is in the early stages) is just getting worse. However on my own I reduced my intake of Effexor XR by 37.5 and the pain has lessened. Is anyone else out there experiencing this side effect? HELP!

Let's try that again!
I have been taking Effexor XR for 6mths, at the high point I was on 225mgs Iwas feeling so many different side effects I was starting to believe I was a hypochondriac, I only mentioned a couple of the side effects to my Dr (I did not realise at the time they were side effects) my knee became very painful and I could not put any weight on it, WEIGHT being the operative word!I have gained 24lbs in the last 6months!!! I was told the pain in my knee was just my age, 48yrs and he suggested that I take something for my joints. Low and behold I found this sight, little did I know HOW MANY TRUE SIDE EFFECTS I WAS HAVING! I decided to go off the effexor cold turkey WHAT A MISTAKE!! the withdrawal symptoms were deadly..I only lasted 3 days and I had to take a pill, I only took 75mgs not my regular 225mgs some of the major side effects did subside but only slightly. I see my Dr today and I have a page and a half of things I want to discuss with him..this is one crazy drug, you can't tell me your body does not get addicted to it!! Would you believe I actually started lactating during the three days I was totally off it!!! I could go on for ever here but I am sure to bore you all.
Thanks for listening!

Effexor 75mg is becoming a pain in the neck literally. It works well for levelling my mood but I fear that i'll have to ditch it due to the shoulder neck and head pain. When i'm off it it dissapears, magic.Another strange one,i had bad flu for approx 6 hours[did't miss a dose]then it vanishished as quick as a switch turning the lights off .Strange drug this,i have a love and hate relationship with it .

Yes, I had the same while on SSRIs. For whatever reason most CNS agents, which most people take for years, are only tested for 6 weeks by the FDA. Any sideffects that aren't reported by then (it takes a while for the myalgias to get started) seem to be frequently overlooked by those who read the packaging inserts between writing scrips and going to industry-supported seminars. Imagine the outcry if the FDA would only test pacemakers for 6 weeks, and suggest that anything beyond that is gravy!

I had joint pain, redness and swelling of joints with Celexa, Prozac, Paxil, and Zoloft. I haven't tried Effexor. My docs also tried to tell me it wasn't the drugs, but when I stopped taking them, the joint symptoms subsided over several months.

I wonder if the muscle pain can be offset by a 5HT2A blocker (like serzone, for one), as it seems it is the serotonergic action on this receptor that causes the muscle contractions problem. I may be way off. Maybe SLS can chime in?
