Hi, I'm seeing my psychdoc this Friday, but was wondering if anyone ever had an antidote for the sexual dysfunction from taking Nardil. I'm going to ask for Selegiline, even though it's another MAOI. But, as it's primarily an MAO-B inhibitor, hopefully he'll feel comfortable giving that to me at a low dosage, say 15 mg/day.
By the way, for those of you who have sexual difficulties and haven't tried selegiline, I'd strongly recommend it. I've taken it before, without Nardil, and it increased my sexual desire, sensation, and orgasm tremendously. Now that I think about it, I really miss it. Just joking.
But, please give me your thoughts if you've heard of whether or not Selegiline, in a low dose, can be taken with Nardil.
Thanks.

John,
How long did it take you to notice the sexual
benefits of selegiline? How much do you think you
would need to take for that particular benefit?

I was trying to see if it would mimic or be better than Parnate, as Selegiline loses is MAO-B selectivity somewhere above 15 mg/day. The sexual benefit I experienced was somewhere in the two to three week range, I believe, and the benefit seem to increase for about another two weeks. I understand that the benefit is related to the MAO-B inhibition, which is maxed out around 15 mg/day. The MAO-B inhibition, and resultant dopamine effect is what provides such a powerful sexual effect. Psychopharmacologists classify sexual function according to three areas: arousal, erectile/libido, and orgasm. Selegiline helped with all three. I found it to be very, very stimulating. As you can tell, I miss it.

\John,
I wonder why this has been such a well kept secret?
And why, I wonder, is one of the potential side effects
for the drug listed as "sexual problems"? Most people
I've read on this board seem to get a sexual benefit, not
a problem? Weird. Maybe no one really uses it b/c
it can't be used with an ssri, which most people are on?
I want to try it.

John/Roo:
Most people don't use it because a) their doctors aren't familiar with it b) above 15 mg it has all the dietary restrictions and hypertensive crises dangers that traditional MAOs have and c) most people do not get an anti-depressant effect until they hit about 40 mg. What my pdoc is doing is using Neurontin for anti-depressant effects as well as mood stabilizing. I'm at 900 mg and by god it seems to be working. Houstin, we have ignition! But you know how that goes all happy and hopeful on day 1 of new dose. Anyway, I really want the Selegiline to work because of the neuroprotective qualities that it has. You know depression is related to reduced brain mass. I have also thought of adding Mirapex to the mix for its effects on anhedonia.

> JohnBSelegiline is currently making me impotent..so that may not be a good choice, Yohimbee worked for me in tiny doses quite well with the NArdil issue. Eventually though I couldn't handle the weight gain, fatigue, AND sexual dysfunction. Just too many side effects, but I am quite sensitive to meds.. I think it is unsafe to combine to MAOI's even one that is selective like the Selegiline.
