I love Wellbutrin SR it has been the only drug that has worked for me. But I am allergic to it. It makes my face and eyes swell. Is there anything like it ? Some one suggested Reboxitine but I haven't read any good posts about it.So I am hesitant to try it.Thanks in advance for your ideas.

Lynne,
From what I understand, Wellbutrin SR's makeup is unlike any other AD. It affects norepinephrine and dopamine, but not serotonin.
Reboxetine affects norepinephrine. Don't know where you live, but Rebox isn't available yet in the U.S.
What other drugs have you tried? Do you have a psychiatrist who is current on meds?

I live in the US. I don't know about my doc he is willing to try about any drug that I ask for. But I seem to know more about some drugs than he does.I have used all the SSRI,Stimulants,Selegiline,Parnate,Zyprexa. The only one to work was WellbutrinSR.
I have ADD,OCD and social Phobia.
Thanks for your help,
Lynne

> LynneLynne,
From the typical set of meds I believe Effexor XR
is the closest wrt dopamine action, although it
is weaker. At high dosage Effexor does re-uptake
norepinephrine like Wellbutrin. Both meds treat
ADD as well as depression for example. The fringe medications that have specific
dopaminergic action that are ofter discussed on
this ng are options, but I'm not an expert
in this arena. Help from the peanut gallery....Wellbutrin has an amphetamine like kick to it
when it works for me. I was thinking that
selegiline (deprynl) will also have this kick
because it prevents the breakdown of dopamine via
mao-b inhibition + one of its metabolites is
methampehtamine. Anyone have comments on this?
Because I also have been wondering what is a good
Wellbutrin replacement.-John

your ADD , OCD , and social phobia symptoms.I'm a little surprised if Wellbutrin helped OCD.
Usually serotonergic agents target OCD (which
Effexor may help). Have you tried Effexor?
It wasn't on your list (or is it indirectly
lumped in the SSRI's category) ?-john

I also have depression, ADD and OCD and am currently taking Wellbutrin and Concerta. I have found a slight decrease in my OCD symptoms on these drugs, but it is nowhere near the improvment I had with Prozac.
I think that with the Wellbutrin and Concerta keeping the depression and the ADD somewhat under control, I am somehow more able to deal with the OCD symptoms on my own (does this make sense?).

Thanks Dr Bob, that's something that no one would have thought of.
Lynne, I take a small 2mg/day dose of Rebox and like it. It's very similar to Well in my experience - energizing and can cause sleep problems.

Thanks to everyone for posting information for me.I have used Effexor before and I didn't like it. It had too many side effects mostly vision and fatigue.
I did wonder about Wellbutrin SR and the purple dye, so I soaked it in water until the dye came off and then took the tablet it caused the facial edema again.
What is the difference between Moclobemide and Reboxitine? I am also concerned with drugs that cause weight gain, because I am obsessed with food!!Thanks Again,
Lynne

Hi, Lynne.I switched to Wellbutrin SR "from" Serzone for the same reasons. I am having success so far with the Wellbutrin SR, but it's been a short time that I've been on it. But I had great success with Serzone until I started swelling as well. I switched all my dose to bedtime (350mg at the time) so I would sleep through the swelling and then in the morning I would wake up with no side-effects at all. This worked for months until I needed to up the dose and I just couldn't get any higher because of the swelling, so my pdoc and I started over looking for something else. Long story just to say, Serzone was great!
Take care, Terra

Lynne - You said that you soaked of the purple dye and still had a reaction. It still might be worth trying a different color Wellbutrin pill (and of course adjusting the dose accordingly). If you are extremely sensitive, there may have been enough dye left that you couldn't see that still gave you the reaction.

Lorraine--Selegiline was a real puppy upper with me. It reminded me of Wellbutrin. Moclobemide (MAO reversible) also reminded me of Wellbutrin.
could you tell me some more about selegiline as a possible replacement for wellbutrin? i had never heard of it before. i've been on wellbutrin for 2 1/2 years now and it has been the only AD ever to work for me (i've also been on most of the ssri's and serzone). lately i feel like the effects may be wearing off. sometimes if i up my dosage to 450 mgs for a few days i feel an improvement, but otherwise... anyway, i've been reluctant to admit this waning of effect b/c i've been afraid that the only alternative is effexor, which almost everyone i know who's tried it tells me to stay far away from. it's really encouraging to hear about something else. how long were you on it? did you experience any significant side effects. any info would be appreciated. thanks!

Well, Selegeline and Mocloebimide are both MAOs. Mocloebimide is not available in the US but if your pdoc writes a script you can get it from Canada mail order. Selegeline was developed for Parkinsons disease. It's an MAO A inhibitor at low doses. I happen to be back on Effexor myself. I think it has a "bad rap"--not necessarily justified. I was on it before but gain 35 pounds and lost my interest in sex. My pdoc has put me back on it with amphetamine to counterbalance the weight and side effects. He also has me on a very low dose of Effexor (25 mg a day). Good luck.
This is the end of the thread.
