I got off Effexor. So can You.

Posted by mattking2000 on February 4, 2001, at 10:02:39

I took effexor xr for over a year. This has been a pain in the a** to post. But I feel its important to tell people you can get off this drug and go back to normal. I took 75 to 150 mg a day. The withdrawl was horrible because I tried to go cold turky at first. Puked, felt horrilbe, could do nothing. Then I tried lots of dramimine and 1 prozac a day for a week and this help very much. I would not recommend this drug. Its not worth it. I didn't find it to work all that well and the withdrawl was hell. It took about 2 weeks. The fact sheet for this drug says nothing about addiction or withdrawl they lie do not trust the drug companies with your happiness. They just want to sell the drug and get you on it they do not care about what happens after. And my doctor knew less about this drug than I did from looking it up in the library. Feel free to contact me if you are coming off it. Good luck.
Matt

I don't agree with you

remember this was only YOUR experience, and I think saying that you wouldn't suggest people using this drug is naive. For me, it was a wonder drug... I was at the end of my tether, and it worked wonders.. at 300mg a day. I came off it cold turkey two weeks agi o (pdco redused dose,n mdidn't work aswell, he decided to change meds).. Yeah, it was rough, but only lasted about 5 days... I'm actually back on it now as its the only thing in a long ong list of meds that has helped me at all.

Sorry Matt, but I'm with Nikki. Effexor worked for me when nothing else would. Yes, it pooped out, but it worked for almost 2 yrs. If I thought it would work for that long again, I'd go back on it despite the side effects and the withdrawls.

The key to getting off is to take it VERY slowly. Cold turkey is nuts. 2 weeks is even too fast. I went down from 300 mg/day by cutting 75mg a day per week for 4 weeks, and that was barely tolerable.

The common thread here is that the effectiveness of effexor varies from individual to individual and that withdrawl is horrible.

This is not unlike most of the other ADs around.

Let's just leave it at that, OK?

> remember this was only YOUR experience

The stuff works great for me and I experience NO withdrawal symptoms. Actually, quite the opposite. The XR keeps me awake at night and the non-XR doesn't. Better yet, lately, when I wake at night or in the morning, I'm always pitching a tent - again the opposite of XR. This has not happened to me before with any other drug, including previous uses of Effexor. The last time I took Effexor, Every Other Day dosing resulted in better mood and energy, not withdrawl. The one difference this time is that I'm taking Adderall with Effexor now. I'm one of the lucky ones according to my pdoc wrt effexor withdrawl and had to insist on the non-XR. I don't think the mfr. lies about it as much as they all do about weight gain and sexual dysfunction. I've not been lucky with some of the other drugs I've have been on:
Wellbutrin and Wellbutrin SR both made me nauseaous and feeling like I had a major flu.
Remeron made me sleepy for 2 days after 1/2 a pill.
Serzone made me sleepy and foggy so that I never did get to a therapeutic dosage.

This is the end of the thread.
