I've been doing quite a bit of reading on this subject. You might want to check out the following site.

Hi SadSuzie!
Hope you at least aren't any sadder than usual...> I've been doing quite a bit of reading on this subject. You might want to check out the following site.

>http://www.selegiline.com/depplus.html is a page linked to the one you mentioned. It describes treating depression with
"1-deprenyl (5-10 mg daily) plus 1-phenylalanine (250 mg/day)"with a supposed mechanism of action
"based on the accumulation of 1-phenylethylamine in the brain."Since phenylalanine is being used instead of phenylethylamine ( PEA ), it seems like the idea is the former helps generate, or is converted into, the latter. Anyone know any details of the relationship between the two?
Are either phenylalanine or PEA available to consumers like thee and me? Maybe in some sort of legal OTC 'dietary supplement'?
peace and health,
S.D.

Try http://creativedevelopment.hypermart.net/ instead to get where JahL was intending. It is a site put up by a doctor who says he has a patent ( USA: 5455276 (October 3, 1995) ) on the use of PEA to treat depression ( Does that mean I'm infringing on his patent if I get some PEA to treat my own depression??!).
Another page on his site ( http://server12.hypermart.net/creativedevelopment/References.html ) lists several research articles on PEA and mood disorders.
peace and health,
S.D.

I believe I took L-phenylalanine and got extremenly irritable/disinhibited so I discontinued.J.L.

JahL:
Based on what I've read, I really doubt if PEA, by itself, will give any effect, other than headaches. It can be compounded with amphetamine to produce a number of DEA Schedule I drugs (for restricted research only, street drugs).
The chemist Shulgin reported "no effects" from oral doses of pure PEA up to 1600mg, or from i.v. doses up to 50mg.
This is the end of the thread.
