Greetings,
I have been on Parnate 10 mg bid for almost three weeks now.
My question is at the end; just a bit of background here ...
Female, 26 years old, no prior problems with BP. Monday I woke up with the classic symptom that the AD's weren't working -- I just wanted to go back to bed, exhausted, and I didn't want to go to work.
I talked myself out of it and increased the dosage to 20 mg bid. Left a message on my psychiatrist's line and he got back to me and said to watch it closely. Was on the 40 mg a day for two days.
Today I took my second dose (6 a.m. and noon) at about 12:30. Almost EXACTLY an hour later I was sitting outside, reading, having a butt and drinking herbal tea when BAM, all of a sudden pain radiated from the back of my neck into my brain and I felt like I had 100 litres of blood in my brain just bursting to get out. I had also smoked about four or five cigarettes there (stress).
I work in a medical building and the first aid attendant didn't even have a BP tester (I left mine at home today) so I went up to the TB clinic and fortunately they had one. My BP was 170/100. Just SKYROCKETED from the normal hypotension that I have, 80/60 in that range.
Went to a clinic, he didn't know what to do (what a knob - hypertension and you don't know what to do to alleviate it? - I had the name of the drug written down but again, it was at home -- gotta start putting this all in m palm pilot). Anyways he called another doctor and gave me an anti-hypertensive med and sent me home. When I woke up three hours later and took my BP it was really low, when I was up for a while it was back up to 134/90 which is high for me but at least the headache was gone.
All I had that day to eat, which was nothing out of the ordinary and has not caused problems before, was:
kashi cereal with soy milk, splenda
cream cheese on a bun with cranberry jelly
3/4 c yoghurt with 1/2 c ricotta cheese and 1/2 c blueberries
2 litres of celestial seasonings toffee tea
3 caramel tastetations
4 mercendyl pills (muscle relaxants, contain coedine and acetamenophine as well as some other drug); something I have taken before with no problems.Well I'm definitely cutting out the milk products as I'm allergic to them anyways in case they were causing a problem.
The dr advised me to lower my parnate back to the 20 mg a day which I agreed with.
My question is, was it the drastic increase in dosage? What is the recommended increase in dosage for this med to get it to a therapeutic dosage?
Thank you for any information/suggestions.
:-) Tori

I doubt that your increase in Parnate caused your hypertensive crisis. However, the higher dosage with the codeine probably caused it. I take 80 mg Parnate and pretty much eat what I want, but I have avoided codeine and other contraindicated drugs. If you need this muscle relaxer, I think you will have to switch to another class of AD

Hi Michael,
Interesting ..... I don't *have* to take the codeine, there was actually a med from my doctor that I tried and it worked great. I'll take your suggestion and get a prescription from him for the new anti-headache medication - it isn't an opiate or anything like that. The codeine isn't working anymore, anyways (that's nothing new).
Today my BP was in the 135+/90+ range and I had a headache all day long ... I took one anti-hypertension med and went to bed and it's gone down and the pain's gone.
It's hard figuring out what triggers these things. I've never had hypertension before in my life.
Thanks for writing back! :-) Tori

I've just started taking Nardill. Can I still marinate meats before cooking them?

I've read that you cannot have soy sauce or teriyaki sauce, etc. Any fermented soy-based or protein-based product. Again, just from what I know and each person reacts differently.

fall SAD episode and I loose my energy. I wanted to find out is it
safe to switch from Reboxetine/Sulpiride combo?
I stopped Sulpiride 2 days ago, and I still take
Reboxetine. I was wandering since some people actually add Reboxetine to MAIO's, would it be safe to start from a small dose of Parnate
without the washout period?
I will appreciate any help. MAOI's are my big chance. Also, having 8-years old, I can't really afford to stay in bed.Anna P.

From what I understand, and this is not a medical opinion, I am not an expert, you require a two week washout period for certain SSRI's before starting Parnate, and I believe a longer period of time for Prozac (???) - it depends on how long the drug remains in your system. If you do not follow the proper guidelines it can cause severe problems.
I would highly recommend you seek a good pharmacologist before attempting *any* changes in medication as Parnate, or MAO inhibitors, are medications not to fiddle with.
Hope this helps.
