Greetings,
I have been on Parnate 10 mg bid for almost three weeks now.
My question is at the end; just a bit of background here ...
Female, 26 years old, no prior problems with BP. Monday I woke up with the classic symptom that the AD's weren't working -- I just wanted to go back to bed, exhausted, and I didn't want to go to work.
I talked myself out of it and increased the dosage to 20 mg bid. Left a message on my psychiatrist's line and he got back to me and said to watch it closely. Was on the 40 mg a day for two days.
Today I took my second dose (6 a.m. and noon) at about 12:30. Almost EXACTLY an hour later I was sitting outside, reading, having a butt and drinking herbal tea when BAM, all of a sudden pain radiated from the back of my neck into my brain and I felt like I had 100 litres of blood in my brain just bursting to get out. I had also smoked about four or five cigarettes there (stress).
I work in a medical building and the first aid attendant didn't even have a BP tester (I left mine at home today) so I went up to the TB clinic and fortunately they had one. My BP was 170/100. Just SKYROCKETED from the normal hypotension that I have, 80/60 in that range.
Went to a clinic, he didn't know what to do (what a knob - hypertension and you don't know what to do to alleviate it? - I had the name of the drug written down but again, it was at home -- gotta start putting this all in m palm pilot). Anyways he called another doctor and gave me an anti-hypertensive med and sent me home. When I woke up three hours later and took my BP it was really low, when I was up for a while it was back up to 134/90 which is high for me but at least the headache was gone.
All I had that day to eat, which was nothing out of the ordinary and has not caused problems before, was:
kashi cereal with soy milk, splenda
cream cheese on a bun with cranberry jelly
3/4 c yoghurt with 1/2 c ricotta cheese and 1/2 c blueberries
2 litres of celestial seasonings toffee tea
3 caramel tastetations
4 mercendyl pills (muscle relaxants, contain coedine and acetamenophine as well as some other drug); something I have taken before with no problems.Well I'm definitely cutting out the milk products as I'm allergic to them anyways in case they were causing a problem.
The dr advised me to lower my parnate back to the 20 mg a day which I agreed with.
My question is, was it the drastic increase in dosage? What is the recommended increase in dosage for this med to get it to a therapeutic dosage?
Thank you for any information/suggestions.
:-) Tori
