I can't answer your question; but have you thought of trying hypnosis for your fear of flying? jane

> Hi, I'm on Effexor too, only the starting dose though, but I asked my pharmacist if Xanax is ok with it (I kinda get it on the sly for emergencies to help with my anxiety). And he said it's safe to use with it, as long as I'm not taking huge doses of both. I said I take the blue Xanax- in half. So he said that's fine. Soooo... I was told it's safe. However, since you are taking a larger dose of Effexor, I wonder if you're gonna sleep thru the whole flight if you combine with some Xanax. It may be what you want, right? D.

If you have fear of flying, probably not a bad idea to take an anti-anxiety drug such as Xanax (alprazolam) during your 5-hour flight. One unusual concern, though. When traveling on a long flight especially across time zones, taking a benzodiazepine, especially those short-acting ones, may cause anterograde amnesia. Not a serious problem but may cause you undue alarm.

Effexor has a weak effect on the different cytochrome (liver) enzymes and the combination with Xanax is considered generally safe. However, if you are taking other meds, you should inform your doctor about them as they may potentially interact badly with Xanax. Also, avoid grapefruit juice and alcohol during your flight as they may intensify the effect of Xanax.

Bon Voyage.

I believe Xanax would be the drug of choice for such a situation. I think a dose of 1mg should be sufficiently anxiety-relieving and sedating to make your trip flying pass quickly and painlessly. I would experiment with the Xanax first though, at least a few times, so you are familiar with its effects on you and what your tolerance is like.

same problem...

and I fly all the time.

usually I take Ativan, which is a short acting benzo. (about 2 to 3 mg) which is too much because I have to sleep for a day or two afterwards. I'd take your pill about an hour before the flight. If I were you, I'd take 1 and 1/2 mg because flying is extra scary...I mean, this is not just regular anxiety!

Before Ativan, I used to take gravol and beer and it used to knock me out silly for the entire plane ride. I'm really not sure if the Ativan works better than the gravol and beer, or which is better for my body.

Good luck, Janice

ps my fear of flying is dying...it's almost dead now. good luck. It won't crash.

I want to know how the flight went. I'm on prozac and I need to take something for flying as I have decided I should start flying again after staying away from it for a few years. I'm not scared it will crash; I'm scared of feeling claustrophobic and afraid of turbulence. All I want is to sit in my seat oblivious like a sack of potatoes.

Easy street. Get a short acting benzodiazapine like most doctors prescribe for these situations.
Suggestions: Xanax, Ativan, Valium.
You might feel sleepy but these meds will help you with the present anticipatory anxiety.

Also, try CBT therapy if you haven't already to help to see if you can minimise the need for medication.

Best Wishes. I've been there!

I had a great flight. My doctor gave me klonopin.
I kept taking bites of one pill through out the entire flight and I was good.I was a person who would not fly (so you can't get be any worse). Get klonopin it works.
