If you have fear of flying, probably not a bad idea to take an anti-anxiety drug such as Xanax (alprazolam) during your 5-hour flight. One unusual concern, though. When traveling on a long flight especially across time zones, taking a benzodiazepine, especially those short-acting ones, may cause anterograde amnesia. Not a serious problem but may cause you undue alarm.

Effexor has a weak effect on the different cytochrome (liver) enzymes and the combination with Xanax is considered generally safe. However, if you are taking other meds, you should inform your doctor about them as they may potentially interact badly with Xanax. Also, avoid grapefruit juice and alcohol during your flight as they may intensify the effect of Xanax.

Bon Voyage.
