Celexa and eye pain

Posted by SC on August 26, 2000, at 17:14:34

I get itching and burning eyes and feeling of grit in them to the point of extreme pain with Celexa. I tried it several times and it happens every time and once I had hugh hives on it. The Celexa worked for my mood but the physical effects were intolerable. Now I am trying effexor and it doesnt seem to do much but make me feel droopy and my eyes are slowly bothering me more and more with it. The info on Celexa says it can cause eye pain and problems with tears. The info on Effexor says it can cause something with eyes called Mydriasis. Has anyone else had this happen? Can I expect that all the serotonin uptake drugs (if there are more than these two) will do the same thing to me?

Hi SC,

I have encountered in the literature paroxetine (Paxil) causing a glaucomatous attack. This was proposed to be due to its anticholinergic effect. You should probably avoid this antidepressant. I do not know if this is a risk with citalopram (Celexa) or venlafaxine (Effexor). If the eye pain persists, you should have an ophthalmological check up.

Another possibility is, Celexa and Effexor may be causing some form of allergic reaction. However, this reaction is usually not accompanied by eye pain.

As James mentioned, "mydriasis" means dilatation of the pupils. The size of the pupils is larger than normal. This is not an uncommon side effect from drugs with anticholinergic effects. BTW, are you taking other meds? Over-the-counter antihistamines, sinus meds, "sleeper"?

JMHO (Just my humble opinion).

Well i just had to quit Effexor also because of the same thing happening. However the Effexor didnt seem to help me much like the Celexa did. I dont take antihistamines but I do have some Sjogrens syndrome which is a dry eyes and mouth that accompanies Rheumatoid arthritis. I also have asthma and allergies but this thing with the eyes is definately tied to the drugs. Im really afraid to try any of the other serotonin uptake drugs now. I do get reactions from many drugs so if there is a weird one, I will get it. It isnt a glaucoma though as the first time i didnt realize what was doing the eyes reaction and ended up at an opthamologists and he said it was a definate allergic reaction as compared to the dry eyes problem that occasionally flares up.
