Hey Cam: I take 600mg of Manerix and 1mg of Rivotril a day and am still suffering panic attacks. The rivotril takes so long to metabolize that it's no help for the sudden panic attacks. Can I take Xanax when the attack happens without overdosing because of the rivotril? I tried it once but felt kinda loopy and I was wondering if the two benzo's are bad together. Also, is Manerix one of those AD's that is supposed to take care of anxiety as well as depression? The depression is gone but the anxiety, alas, still remains as strong as ever. Thanks in advance, love ya--Tina P.S. How are you and your family doing these days? Thinking about you all the time.

My Panic attacks have changed totally.... I no longer get the stomach pain much at all, (only once every few days) and the whole dizzy, sick feeling has gone... But now I shake all over, and so much... people notice and comment, and sometimes it gets so bad I can't talk. I'm quite lucid during these attacks, and try as hard as possible to calm myself down.... they're so so wierd!

Tina - Do you take a regular, scheduled dose of Rivotril? If so, adding Xanax for breakthrough panic attacks has been used. There should be no problem taking Rivotril with Xanax, just watch for increased sedation and "hang-over" effect. You may want to skip the next Rivotril dose after taking a Xanax.
Before taking the Xanax with the Rivotril, run this by your doc first. There may be a reason he/she may not want you to take the two together. Just explain the situation of breakthrough panic and Rivotril taking too long to work. Also ask about missing the Rivotril dose after taking a Xanax.
My family is still trying to find a "new normal". Every now and then I find myself thinking that Suz will be phoning to use the car or to come over for supper (actually she would have been living with us for the summer, until school started). Also, the dog tore ligaments in her knee and she had to have surgery. We did hope like hell that she wouldn't react to the anesthetic (she didn't). She's limping and the kitten is torturing her, but she should be fine.
Hope this helps - Cam

Tina,
a couple of things.
depending on the PA symptoms, a beta blocker may help. They help most if you have mainly cardiovascular or adrenergic mediated things like racing heart, BP spikes, flushing, sweating, shakes & tremors. They work in a day or so & are very helpful for some. they do little for anxiety itself, but the rivotril should help with that.
3 used. inderal (3x /day), pindolol ( 2x /day), atenolol (Tenormin) 1x /day. Of the 3 pindolol may speedup the effective onset of psych drugs as well as relieve some of the epinephrine related effects of PA.
in the archives pindolol also helped a few people with ringing in the ears from meds.you can speed up the onset of the rivotril by letting it melt under your tongue. tastes like crap, but works a lot faster.

Cam--you are such an inspiration to me. That said i will answer your questions. I do take the Rivotril at regular times. One in the morning and one at night. I can't increase that because I get sleepy and useless. My doc is a witch who doesn't think I need Xanax as well as Rivotril and won't give it to me. She is afraid I'll overdose and doesn't want that responsibility. Like it's all about HER--please! How can I convince her that I need both and I won't overdose. The depression is taken cae of most days and suicide is NOT an option I think about. If I skip the next Rivotril after taking Xanax will my body go into withdrawal at all and start that vicious cycle of which one do I take when?
dan--thanks for the info. I'll try the melting under my tongue thing. I know it tastes like shit but I'll try anything right now. I want my life back damn it!
Thank you to everyone that contributed to this. Nikki, love you babe. I immediately get the sick feeling and the stomach pain and then the shakes come. Never been any different for me. I hope that will change though.
Take care of yourselves, everyone. You mean the world to me.--hugs, Tina

Tina - I don't know how to convince a psychiatrist of anything, especially when they are not receptive to information. I do see her side though; she has to cover her butt. If anything did go wrong with you taking both, a good lawyer could successfully sue. I really don't think that overdosing would be a problem. The problem would be excess sedation and lethargy. If Rivotril came in a sublingual dose, like Ativan, it would be great (faster acting). Tell us how the regular Rivotril under the tongue works (it should because of all of the blood vessels under the tongue will increase absorption). Sorry that I can't help more than that. - Cam
