I started taken 10mg of Paxil one week ago and I am now up to 30mg. I have the usual side effects of dry mouth, some nausua at first but no more. I also have no desire to eat. People say that there is a great chance of weight gain on paxil but I can't see it happening to me. Has anyone else had a loss of appetite when they started Paxil and how long does it last?

Ralph - If this is only your second week on Paxil and you've already been raised to 30mg, I'd speculate that the lack of appetite, has more to do with your body adjusting to the Paxil or what I call "start-up side effects". These usually last 2 or 3 weeks. Your appetite may return in this time period.
Also, the weight gain with Paxil seems to be an incidious delayed action of the drug. It may be due to a combination of resolving depressive symptoms, increased appetite, decreased metabolism, &/or a myriad of other possibilities. The weight gain seems to really become noticeable in the 2nd or 3rd month. Weight gain does not happen in everyone (actually, some people do lose weight).
Hope this helps - Cam

Hope you do well - Bill

> Hope you do well - BillRalph,
I have been on Paxil since January of this year, and tried quitting a couple of weeks ago, so I now have two Paxil "start-ups" under my belt. (I decided to go back on it). Both times, I was feeling sick, and not wanting to eat, and then all of a sudden, I got my apetite back in a BIG way...couldn't stop eating. I have had some MINOR weight gain (not more than 10 lbs), but nothing I can't live with. Paxil does work well after the initial start up crap.
One thing...if you ever decide you want to quit taking Paxil, MAKE SURE you talk to you doctor FIRST...all those warnings about quitting abruptly, I have found, were there for a reason!
Best of luck to you...Rick E.
