the grand experiment

Posted by paul on July 1, 2000, at 1:59:47

well, folks, here we go-
over the years i've been on a sizeable pile of a-d's-this last one being serzone. unlike the years past, however, i bring to this grand experiment-which is a try at being drug-free-a wealth of experiences gleaned from counseling that leave me with a clearer understanding of just how i am who i am than i've ever even dreamed of before. the pharmacological facts are these:
after being on varying doses of serzone for over a year, and ahving fairly good luck with it, my doctor and i agree that it has not substantially helped my lifelong sleep problem which was why i started taking it in the first place. i took the entire dosage at bedtime. when i tried dosing earlier in the evening so as to maximize it's sedation effects, i ended up with BAAAAD ringing-in-the-ear problems. i'm a musician, so i already have an orchestra goin on in there 24/7. the added racket caused by the sz was unbearable. we have decided to take me off of it and see how i do. we already know that i can't tolerate the higher doses so that as well is out. i maybe wearing my underwear outside of my clothes, but i think i'll be fine without it.
i've also been trying out seroquel, with limited success. it has its benefits, but being stoned all day just don't work, so it's on its way out too. i've been on it long enough for this effect to have subsided, but it hasn't. i may be depending on you all a LOT should i turn out to be wrong. i look forward to being drug-free.
all i'll be taking is clonipin for sleep-i don't like the idea but the stuff usually works alright. wish me luck!!

.....just a thought Paul, but if you find later that you do need to return to medication of some kind, would it be fair to say it might be worth exploring other medication classes rather than antidepressants? Has the whole antidepressant class proven to be the wrong chemistry with you?

> wish me luck!!

.....Best wishes to you. With good counseling, you may indeed find medication isn't needed. One way to find out! :-)

P.S. Serzone gave me that loud ringing in the ear too. I mean, LOUD. I wonder why that is? I didn't sleep all that well with it either. The higher the dose the louder it was and the worse I slept. It's strange, but my ear ringing has decreased and my sleep is awesome (not to mention depression gone) while taking the mild psychostimulant Adrafinil. Go figure. I never would have suspected. Antidepressants for me were wrong all along.

pcl, suggest you take your regular meds at your regular day time, and at night, try l/2 of a 25 mg Benadryl tablet (or even less). They are available over the counter, and having taken some recently for an allergy, found i slept great! of course, run this by your pdoc first. good luck!

cindy-
i wouldn't bet my foot on it, but having any fully-metabolized serzone in my system at or near sleepytime would probably mean major ringy-dingy as before. i want to try and be off of it altogether-this time, as opposed to last time, i'm in much better shape and am not doing it because i've been backed into a corner. whatever eyesight i got left, i'm using.
harry b-thanks-i do have your address. we'll be in touch.
john-
i'll mention it to der doc. ad's HAVE done me a lot of god but i really feel able to hoe my own boat-er, row my own hoe-hell you know what i mean (do I know what i mean???).
noa
thanks for the good wishes
i think thats everybody-back to packing-finally moving to colorado where i'll finally SEE the mountains my soul cries for----

Paul-
Good luck.
.5mg clon in the am & 3mg at night here. Tell me
about the seroquel, especially the thought-calming
effect.

I know where you're going, but where are you now?
BTW, you do spell very well :)

i b in MIZZERY-as in missouri where the weather is like a dumpster full of hot water, dirty diapers and noozepapers!! who kneads the yunglez of borneo when yooze gots MIZZERY?
the seroquel seems to quiet the "rat on the wheel" ruminations fairly well in addition to helping me let go of things-especially assinine ones-much easier. set dem bound'reeze and MOOOOOOOOVE on!! even on no sleep-like today-had to get up early to wait for somebody who's now an hour late-me and get-up time deadlines just DON'T micks.
