Adderall and Cycling - Need Info Please!

Posted by Mark Stephens on April 26, 2000, at 23:17:15

Hello. I am a high endurance athlete, and race bicycles. My wife and I were having marital problems, and she told me if I didn't get on medication for my "energy problem and bad temper" that we were never going to be able to work things out. I didn't want to get on it because I figured it would affect my cycling, and also it is not an approved drug for flying (I am a licensed pilot). However, my marriage was more important. I was diagnosed with Adult ADD a long time ago, but did nothing about it until now. I have been taking adderall for about a month, usually 15 mg in the morning and 10 in the afternoon. I have found that my heartrate is higher than it was (resting hr and also hr during intense physical activity). I was wondering if there were any dangers to an elevated heart rate. My time trialing heartrate is up, but I feel OK, and my times are good... But, I know my heart isn't acting right because I have always used a heart rate monitor. It's kind of scary, I don't want to work my heart too hard, even when I am not trying to. Like for example, right now it is around 80 bmp and I have been sitting in front of the computer for a few hours doing nothing. Usually, it would be under 60...... any advice?? I don't want my heart to blow up!!!!!!! Thank you!! And yes, I do drink several sodas per day, usually a Diet Dr. Pepper in the morning, and a Mt. Dew at lunch. Thanks a lot!

It might not be a bad idea to consult a Cardiologist and if stimulants present a serious threat to your health you might share this information with your wife. There may be alternative treatments to your condition, I don't know if they would interfer with your cycling and flying etc..

Mark,

When I started out on reboxetine my resting pulse rate shot up from 60 to over 80. It took the wind out of sails when I exercised. I would get breathless easily. My resting pulse rate has subsided with time to about 72. Both amphetamines and reboxetine act on norepinephrine. Norepinephrine has cardiac effects. You might want to read the thread up above about metabolife and ephedrine because ephedrine also acts on norepinephrine and you should be cautious using it and then doing heavy exercise. I'd think that if there was anything wrong with your heart, this extra stress might precipitate an event. Hopefully your pulse rate wil go down with time like mine.

All the best,

AndrewB
