Wellbutrin?

Posted by Noa on April 22, 2000, at 15:14:44

I need to change my med cocktail somewhat--this one not working enough: effexor xr 375; synthroid and cytomel; ritalin sr 20 mg 2x/day; and serzone 225 in the evening.

Another thought is to add Wellbutrin and eventually lower or go off the effexor. Any thoughts?

Noa,

I second that motion. In fact, if I were in your shoes, I'd taper off everything but the Thyroid meds over two weeks, drinking tons of water to flush my system and start from scratch, with a new doc. But, that's just me. There's got to be a better answer than the roller coaster you've been on.

I want you to know I enjoy reading your posts and feel for you when you are hurting. I wish you the best.

Karen

If you're still with the one who barely has the time of day for you, I'd agree ... but changing can be such a bitch, can't it? When I was bouncing from SSRI to SSRI with no luck, I was seriously considering the same. But one thing I have to hand to my pdoc -- he *does* listen to me and takes what I have to say seriously. He may move slowly, too slowly at times, but he never takes what I have to contribute for granted. That makes the long hard road with him more bearable.

You've been through so much, Noa, I can't keep things straight. Do a little thinking aloud, will you please? In particular, do you think you know which neurotransmitters to target or which ones NOT to target?

You know, it seems like you've seen so much you could probably just go to Dr. Jensen and tell him what you've done and how you've reacted and he could probably come up with a plan on the spot. ;^)

cheers,
bob

with everything that you are taking the risks of a very negative reaction to any or all of your current meds seems possible. is your doc prescribing all this? be aware that wellb causes sleeplessness and irritability-sometimes VIOLENT irritability. not that you havent but talk to yer doc first, please.

Noa,
I apologize for being repetitive and persistent...but I REALLY feel strongly you should look at 'comparing' other stimulants besides Ritalin, and comparing several antipsychotics. I believe these have more robust and more rapid potentials than Buspar, Wellbutrin, or any other choices I can think of. I'll spare you a lengthy technical term paper as to why I feel strongly about this, but the highlights are:
1. Potential for RAPID improvement...one day to one week.
2. Get away from the antidepressant class altogether. They take too long and have been somewhat disappointing overall with your chemistry. We can always come back to them later if the rapid-potential drugs fail.
3. Though the antipsychotics are expensive just like Buspar (pricey!) and Wellbutrin, the stimulants are dirt cheap.
4. In your shoes, I would try these BEFORE exploring any more in the antidepressant class:
Adderall, Ionamin, Tenuate; Risperdal, Stelazine, Zyprexa, Amisulpride; Adrafinil, Modafinil. It's just a gut instinct, but I would bet money your magic molecule is somewhere in this list.

Noa,

I doubt whether my experience in this matter will be of any value to you, but since you have three threads on this matter, here goes....

Currently I am on all of the medications you are taking except instead of Ritalin I am taking Provigil 200 mg.

The sleep doc I was seeing for disturbed sleep added Serzone to the mix, all the way to 450 mg. Except for a little better sleep at night, there was no improvement in mood or more energy during the day.

My pdoc added Wellbutrin SR 300 mg to the cocktail. Felt no better or worse ( I continued on the Effexor at the same time)

Next added Buspar. Same old story. Nothing.

Sorry to sound like a broken record, but as they say YMMV.

Best wishes,

Ash
