I am looking for anyone who has any information about this. I have a friend who was prescribed prozac by her MD. She was already taking an anti-psychotic drug. Recently she started talking about the second-coming of Christ and how she knows when it's going to happen. She also refuses to go to the local mental health hospital because she is absolutely certain she will be killed if she goes there. She recently quit school, quit her job and left her boyfriend to "spend the rest of her life with his son". She says she's perfectly sane and everyone around her is crazy. She "knows" things that are going to happen...
I've known her for 4 years and never seen this behaviour before. The worse I've ever seen is her become paranoid when under a lot of stress and when she's forgotten to take her anti-psychotic medication. I told her I was convinced the Prozac was altering her personality. She spoke to her MD on the phone who apparently got angry at her for citing info about Prozac from the internet. He told her only to come to him and not to get information from the internet. He then asked her some questions to determine her state of mind (?!?) and told her that the Prozac was not causing a problem and she should continue to take it. He isn't aware of the delusional ideas I mentioned here. Why would she mention those to him? She doesn't want to give up the Prozac because she feels great! The man should have his license taken away! It makes me extremely angry.
Any advice in fighting this battle would be very much appreciated!
Thank you,
Liza

I am finding this situation very tough to deal with. My aunt had a major psychotic episode in December: she stripped naked and walked through town. She and I are very close, and I'm her only relative in town! This thing with my closest friend is making me feel SOOO frustrated. To be totally honest, I feel really angry at HER right now. I decided to call her parents and turn it over to them. It's too much for me to take on (dealing with psychosis in people close to me is getting to be a bit much). I've lost a good friend and need someone to talk too!! I'm feeling very ALONE right now.

Liza...
I feel for you! What a horrible thing for you to have to handle alone. Good call phoning your friends parents though, that is what I would have done if I was in your shoes. I hope you explained to the parents all that you have told us, so maybe they can go and give the doctor "what for!" and get her checked into a hospital until she has been stablized. I am very lucky insofar as never having to deal with psycotic people personally, but it must be really frightening to have people you love become someone else. I will be thinking of you...and keep us posted as to the progress (or lack thereof) your friend is making. It is always nice to hear the end of a story 8).Kathie

Hi Kathie,
Thanks for the encouragement. It's amazing how a few caring words can give you strength... Here's the update - my friend got committed to the psychiatric hospital. This is such a relief because she was telling everyone (very convincingly) that she's never felt better in her life. Obviously someone picked up on something. I should call her parents to get the complete story (since they haven't called me yet - harrumph!).I'd like to give her doctor the "what for"! If it wasn't for the internet, I wouldn't have had a clue about possible adverse reactions of her medication. The fact that she's in the hospital should be a wake-up call to him! I'll keep you posted what happens to her.

Looking at the dates on those posts, I think it's great you took such decisive action on this, Liza. We could all use a friend as good as you.
cheers,
