Schizophrenics corner

It seems that psychobabble is under represented by schizophrenics. Are there any other schizo brothers and sisters out there?

In 1986 i was told i was Schizoaffective disorder,at the time i was hearing voices, suicidal,i was told that my ability to relate & socialize w/ other people was markedly deteriorated.I was told that i had violent out breaks when under stress.I don't remember to much of my stay in the hospital,I was in 3 different hospitals one after another for 6mos. I was even sent to a state hospital for adolescent, what a hell hole, the staff was beating some of the kids or being tied w/ ace bandage by six football like guys & carried you by the ace bandage to your bed to tie you up there sometimes for the whole night.
they closed this hospital, after a boy died (he died a couple of mos. before i got there) from drowning in a bathtub unattended,he had a history of epileptic seizures.
sorry got off track, thinking about when i was sick makes me think about that place.

My doctor uses schizophrenic meds a lot for all kinds of psychiatric symptoms...schizo negative symptoms, psychosis, depression, anxiety. He uses three or four regularly, but claims it is crucial that the patient try them all in short trials (2 weeks or so each) to compare and find the best match.

In cases where sedation and/or weight gain are a problem, he prefers Risperdal which generally has less, if any, of those side effects. Another common one he uses is Stelazine. It is more alerting, and works similar to the European med Amisulpride. He also uses Stelazine as an antidote for a bad medicine reaction. He sends all patients home with a sample of Stelazine and/or Xanax, which are to be taken for immediate relief when a trial of an antidepressant or something gives a bad response. Such as worsening depression, anxiety, irritability, etc. Just based on my doctor's strategy--and he is having very good results with it--anyone in need of an antipsychotic should include Risperdal and Stelazine in their trials. One of them may work remarkably better than another for each particular person's chemistry, and the side effect profiles are distinctly different.

John,

This is very useful information for me (as were your balancing comments on Pindolol in another thread this evening).

I'm one of those who likes to keep something on hand for "those days." I have sense enough not to go off on myself or anyone else, but I really just need to take something once in awhile to get through the day. My doctor knows me well enough to know I won't abuse his trust, so he lets me try most anything that I think might help. There are days I think I might benefit from an anti-psychotic, but the only one I've tried is the traveller's anti-emetic, Compazine.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Best wishes,

Mark H.

I'm on Clozaril and Ativan. They work pretty well but I do still have some symptoms. Clozaril is in my opinion one of the best antipsychotic meds available but it does have the drawback of requiring weekly blood tests to make sure there isn't a rare but dangerous side-effect, (white blood cell count drop). The Ativan is for anxiety or agitation and works well but can be addictive. For me the dosage etc. of the meds is a sort of balancing act. Too much and you become lethargic and unmotivated, too little and you might become a little psychotic and hard to live with, (for other people). I would say I am doing reasonably well. Sometimes a low dose of an antipsychotic drug is enough to prevent a relapse and with a lower dose you are less likely to get troublesome side-effects. It might be a good idea to see a counselor every once in a while if you can find one that seems helpful.
