alcoholism = undiagnosed, self-medicated bipolar?

Posted by KarenB on April 6, 2000, at 12:10:48

Is this a possibility? It's just a thought but I listened to a radio show last night (The Infinite Brain) that suggested that alcoholism is ALWAYS found in family histories of Bipolar and ADD patients.

Well, what do you think?

Karen,
"Always" is scary word. "Common" or "prevelant" might be safer terms. I think I listened to the same broadcast last pm!

Blessings,

Chris A.

I agree.

One "should" "never" say "always".

Boozism = self-medication of bipolar symptoms?

Well then, is there often a correlation between alcoholism and the symptoms classified as bipolar?

There is no doubt in my mind that there's a very real alcoholism-depression correlation. I'm not so sure about bipolar. People frequently self-medicate with alcohol, that's what my father did. While my father died from alcoholism, I know that the REAL cause was depression. My dad was born in the 20's when all mental health problems were seen as character flaws. I miss my dad.

Alcoholism and bipolar

Yes afatchic,

As far as I've heard (and even experienced), one of bipolars' favourite ways to self-medicate is with alcohol. I imagine many folks with various disorders also use alcohol, but I'd still guess that unmedicated bipolar people and alcohol have a special attachment to one another.

Sorry about your father. My father also died from alcohol--he was not bipolar though.

I am bipolar, as is my brother. There is depression and bipolar rampant in my family history.
The two of us are either alcoholics or LOVE to drink.
I have read many articles that say that the gene responsible for bipolar, uni-depression, alcoholism, narcississtic personality, add, are of the same origin.
Many of my relatives did not have a alcohol problem, but that is because they were very religious and wouldn't have tried drinking.

So, in conclusion, when you are sucepsible (sp) to something, you should do all you can to avoid conributing factors.
Just like if you have a family history of certain types of cancer, high blood pressure, allergies, diabetes, etc.....you need to be aware of the problems.
Stress will bring out whatever you are susceptible to.
