Yes afatchic,
As far as I've heard (and even experienced), one of bipolars' favourite ways to self-medicate is with alcohol. I imagine many folks with various disorders also use alcohol, but I'd still guess that unmedicated bipolar people and alcohol have a special attachment to one another.
Sorry about your father. My father also died from alcohol--he was not bipolar though.
