Curious Newbie

Posted by Janet on February 20, 2000, at 21:02:18

Has anyone been with this board since the beginning? Do people tend to wander off as they respond to treatment or eventually tire of newbies coming up with the same questions? Or is it a case of once hooked it's impossible to quit? jan

I've been here since about May, off & on...I think all of the below probably apply to varying degrees though I'm not sure how far back the board goes...

Jan - Get out of this board what you need, See how other people have reacted to certain treatments ( not necessarily drug treatment) and base your opinion of that. Alway consult with you doctor on what you read in this newsroom. We have some icrediably astuite people who follow this wedsite on an almost religious basis (althought formal religion is not usually inolved). The checks and balances to this newsgroup are phenomenal. I believe that this group give as no "BS" approach to what we (science) know about how drugs react in the body. We watch out for each other, the give the most accurate depiction of what science knows at that particular instance in time. We correct each other as new research comes to light, We try to help each other to cope with the day to day problems of the lag times of (onset of action of the different psychotropics (incl. antidepressant and atypical antidepressants). Most here have gone through the troubles as you are now or will be expericiencing and have coping mechanism to help us though these trying time. I have been here less than a month and I consider these people to be part of my people (not family). In some ways they are closer than my family, because they understand. I think, that once you have dealt with your 'demon' you can move on, but, what these people do for you, it may be hard to severe all ties (in a good way) -Hope this helps - Cam W.

This board has been around since the summer of 1998 and I've been nearly a daily visitor since the beginning. If you'll search the archives, you see how this board has evolved. My feeling is that some people come looking for specific information and once they find it (or don't find it), they might move on. If they are anything like me, they are so impressed with the information posted here that they stick around. For me, it's like going to a medical library. I come here to read, but not write much. I've said it before, but it's worth repeating: Dr. Bob has done a great job with this site and I've learned a lot here. Thanks again, Dr. Bob!

I have been visiting the board since sometime in 1998, didn't post until the beginning of 1999, and have been much braver in my posting for the last 10 months. Some people find what they need, an open ear, med advice, doctor advice, ect... Then they move on, may see them once in awhile or never again. Others find their home here. I use the babble board as my group therapy. The board is a place to share your fears, your troubles and your experiences. It is also a great place for encouraging others. Sometimes I'm too worn out to post, then I see somebody really hurting and find myself thinking about them instead of myself, which has a positive effect on me. And sometimes I'm too overwhelmed with darkness to reach out to anyone, then this board is my life-line.

Take what you need, ask for what you need, and we'll try to help. Newbie questions can always be answered, either by someone's post, or by pointing you in the right direction. Either way, welcome :-)

I've only been here since January this year, but I think this board is great to learn about meds and I think its wonderful the way everyone helps each other, can't find a more empathetic ear!

I think that once I am feeling better I will check in from time to time to see if I can offer support to people, the way others here have helped me.

Warm welcomes abound here! Don't these people give you the feeling of being enveloped by a gently drifting cloud? They offer a safe haven, where you don't have to wear a mask of any sort. Many of them also have a great sense of humor. Enjoy... Renee N
P. S. I think I found this site in November '99. Addicted? Definitely!!!

I've been here since last October, and I have to say that I probably would not have survived the holidays without this board. If I hadn't read about it here, I would never have known to ask my Pdoc about stimulants for my excessive fatigue(from depression). I was so overwhelmed by all my responsibilities, that I was closer to suicide then I had ever been in my life. It really is thanks to psycho-babble, that I was prescribed Adderall and am here to tell the tale!
I do find that I don't write as much when my mood is improving, but I still cannot go more then a day without checking in here and seeing what is going on with everyone else.CarolAnn

can adderall be taken with Celexa? the drug works good for me except I can barely motivate to get all my housework done. I have to force myself chore after chore including cooking etc.

thanks

Noa? Still a Newbie?

Yeah, right.

If we dug out all the individual messages and carried out any statitical process you could want -- # of responses, # of words, weight of heartfelt concern expressed, amount of support given, I think Noa would be in the 99%tile for each.

I guess you're as newbie as you feel. ;^)

Why, when did you arrive, Bob? I thought you came with the furniture.

I arrived just before Janie and Yardena left ... I think that was September for the latter and October for the former, so I've probably been around since mid August.

But I am often mistaken for a Lazy Boy. ;^)

Are you the Janet from Brazil?

I've been around for about as long as Noa & Bob - late spring, summer or early fall, but I'm not as regular or as well informed as them. But unfortuneately just as experienced!

Janet, If I remember correctly you currently live in Brazil but used to live in England?

What I would love to hear from you is whether or not you ever thought your depression had a seasonal component (I once lived in a climate like Britain's and was never so depressed), and if living in Brazil (I am also assuming it's usually sunny there) has helped your depression overall.

Sometimes I wonder if it would be worth my while to move to a warm, sunny climate.

Welcome, and yes I've learned lots here. Best of all, being proactive helps give me a sense of control over this illness. Kind of like a placebo affect, Janice

ps. a little off topic, but just for my curiousity, do you feel safe living in Brazil?

Yes thats me ! I suffered from SAD from before it was officially recognised I think ( I had never read about it). I think one of the sub- conscious reasons for marrying my husband was to get to a sunnier climate. I could never live in the U. K. now. But I get a kind of SAD from just not being in natural light. I can't stand shopping malls or supermarkets or offices. Does anyone else feel this?

As for the violence; I used to live in São Paulo which is an ugly violent city but in 17 years nothing happened to me . I used to be more scared of the police than actual criminals. The poor Brazilian people are very hard-working and long-suffering. They are the ones that suffer most with violent crime. Their lives are unbelieveably hard and given that the minimum salary is about $80 a month, I am always surprised that the majority are so honest.
Most of the crime is drug related anyhow. I sometimes think that it would be better if govts legalised marijuana and cocaine so that peoples lives wouldn't be at the mercy of these gangs.
I now live in a lovely city called Salvador, it's on the coast and is sunny the whole year around. It isn't as violent as São Paulo (not yet). The coastline is beautiful and the city has an interesting history and culture. Just taking my kids to school lifts my spirits. If you have the option of living in a sunnier place it does help with the SAD part. Thanks for your interest ,Jan

gail, the answer is yes, you can take Adderall with Celexa. In fact, my doctor just added Celexa to my medications, because I still am not feeling as "good" as I should be. Good luck.CarolAnn

Janet, I've been on Wellbutrin since last fall, but even though it is supposed to be a stimulating antidepressant, I was still very fatigued, that's why my Pdoc prescribed Adderall. Now he has added Celexa, because I am still not "well" depression-wise.CarolAnn
