> ps. a little off topic, but just for my curiousity, do you feel safe living in Brazil?Yes thats me ! I suffered from SAD from before it was officially recognised I think ( I had never read about it). I think one of the sub- conscious reasons for marrying my husband was to get to a sunnier climate. I could never live in the U. K. now. But I get a kind of SAD from just not being in natural light. I can't stand shopping malls or supermarkets or offices. Does anyone else feel this?
As for the violence; I used to live in São Paulo which is an ugly violent city but in 17 years nothing happened to me . I used to be more scared of the police than actual criminals. The poor Brazilian people are very hard-working and long-suffering. They are the ones that suffer most with violent crime. Their lives are unbelieveably hard and given that the minimum salary is about $80 a month, I am always surprised that the majority are so honest.
Most of the crime is drug related anyhow. I sometimes think that it would be better if govts legalised marijuana and cocaine so that peoples lives wouldn't be at the mercy of these gangs.
I now live in a lovely city called Salvador, it's on the coast and is sunny the whole year around. It isn't as violent as São Paulo (not yet). The coastline is beautiful and the city has an interesting history and culture. Just taking my kids to school lifts my spirits. If you have the option of living in a sunnier place it does help with the SAD part. Thanks for your interest ,Jan
