Memory problems and Gotu Kola

Posted by Cass on February 16, 2000, at 21:10:41

Hi everyone,
I'm disgusted with my memory. People tell me significant things about their lives, and I forget. I tell people things 3 times before it sinks in that I've already told them. Is this just a symptom of depression? I'm 37. I feel like an early Alzheimer's victim. Right now my psych meds are Celexa and Risperdal. Today I went to a health food store and bought a Gotu Kola tincture. It is touted for its memory improving and mental stimulation qualities. Is anyone having memory problems or has anyone else tried Gotu Kola. I'd be interested...
Thanks,
Cass

Cass, "Memory Problems" could be my middle, or for that matter, my FIRST name! It is the main symptom that brought to the pdoc. I've never heard of Gotu Kola. I wish anyone who has successfully even mildly improved their memory problems through meds would tell me what worked for them. So far stimulants and ADs haven't touched my memory problems. I get so frustrated and embarrassed, but my ADs have taken the edge off of those reactive feelings for me. Renee N

You might want to check with your pharmacist to see if they are aware of any possible interactions between gotu kola and your prescribed meds. I think ginko or pyroglutamic acid would be safer and less likely to interact with your meds. Some herbs may be a bad mix with some meds.

Cass,

1) Check your cortisol levels at your next checkup to make sure they aren't part of the problem.
2) Gingko Biloba, a supplement, may improve your memory. It enhances cerebral circulation. Other supplements for memory to try are Phosphatidyl Serine and Huperzine A. You can try literally dozens of other supplements for memory, but these are some that I consider most likely to work.
3) ADs, especially SSRIs can leave a person foggy headed or at least not help with cognition. I realized the most improvement to my memory when I found the right AD. For example, NARIs such as reboxetine are generally helpful for mental clarity.

In addition to the chemical approach, you could work with a learning specialist to learn memory tricks.
