St John's Wort

Posted by John on February 3, 2000, at 12:50:56

I'm looking for information from other people that have tried or are currently using St John's Wort to treat dysthmia. I've been using it for almost four weeks now and have found that it relieves anxiety, improves sleep quality, and has no negative sexual effects.
However I haven't noticed any improvement in my mood other than that things don't upset me as much as they used to. With the reduction in anxiety and guilt I don't seem to obsess as much as before but the thoughts are still there. They just don't drive me crazy as they used to.
Am I expecting too much from SJW? It doesn't elevate my mood as much as Serzone did but it's side effects are very tolerable.
Also, it seems to have some very positive sexual side effects although it does tend to subdue my libido. I like it better than Viagra and you can easily sleep afterwards.
I'd be interested in other's experiences, especially from other males.
Does this side effect only effect me or is it more universal? If this is more common then SJW seems to be much more preferable to the SSRI's without the nasty negative sexual, insomnia, and anxiety side effects.
The big drug companies will probably do everything possible to downplay SJW.

I took SJW for 2yrs before stopping it & found that it worked great after 2mos. on it, I went back to work & nuring school. the only problem I had was w/ some foods. And like other meds it stopped working for me. not to say that's going to happen to you.

I have found SJW to be useful at times. It was never a miracle or anything for me, but it did help a notch or two on a ten point scale. I don't think I ever dosed high enough though. My sex was improved all around with SJW, most especially in terms of desire. It has some action on dopamine which should stimulate libido, and it lowers prolactin levels which is good for performance. Just up this page a bit is another post about SJW from Noa. In my reply there are some web addresses with good reading on SJW.

I've tried SJW in all kinds of settings. The two best were with 5HTP, and then with Prozac. Two worst were with Paxil(not a good combo at all) or Zoloft.

I think it's important to stick with pharmaceutical formulas used in clinical studies. That would be Kira or Movana at most stores, or Nature's Way Perika at health food stores. The standard dose of 3 pills a day is pretty low. Some studies used doses of 9 pills a day. Though there are a lot of us here not completely well, I have heard reports of SJW being miraculous to some people.

John - St.John's wort for dysthymia may not be a good choice. It is safe and effective in MILD to MODERATE depression and dysthymia is considered to be a chronic state in some people and may need more powerful ADs to treat it. You could give it a try, but don't mix them with prescription ADs. We don't know all the interactions, yet.
