I just wondered whether anyone was on a cocktail which included one of each of those three. Normal dose SSRI, low dose lithium and some anticonvulsant.
If so, which one? Which is least likely to make you feel drwosy? I know, I know. Everyone's different.

Abby, I am not on this combo. I do take effexor and lithium. However, I have talked extensively with my pdoc about treatment of bipolar spectrum disorders, and he has told me that his first line of combos for bipolar is a combo of lithium and depakote, so that the lithium levels can stay no higher than around 1.0, and the combination seems to work well for a lot of people. If it doesn't, he tries either neurontin or lamictal instead of the depakote.
A friend of mine with epilepsy tried lamictal and it was not sedating, however, she developed a bad allergic rash and had to stop. This occurs for some people, not all, and apparently you know fairly early on if it will or not. Now she is on neurontin, which she tolerates well, but it makes her feel tired a lot.Are you considering this combo for depression? Do you have manic symptoms? Forgive me for not recalling if you described your symptoms in an earlier post.
Good luck.

> AbbyAbby, Tried many ssri's + lithium + neurontin. Sleep disturbance was minimal with the same results in relief in my depression. Parnate was the only thing that (+ lithium) has worked so far. Blessings,

Abby,
I've been on depakote, neurontin, tegretol, lamictal and combinations. (All SSRI's cause hypo/and/or/mania in me.) The least side effects occurred with neurontin and lamictal. Neurontin reduced anxiety for me, lamictal was a fairly good anti-depressant- so good I got hypomanic. Neither caused drowsiness. Hope this helps.

I'm assuming you are having break-through depression with lithium? If so, I'll re-push lamictal. Most episodes I've had are manic in nature. Take care.

Can you explain what this means?
Thanks.

Most of the literature I've read suggests that people on lithium experiencing breakthough symptoms do so in the form of depression. That is what I meant although I just saw by an earlier post you are experiencing agitation (I think that was you about crawling skin). What does your pdoc say?

Judy,
I do sometimes have the agitated, anxious, crawly feeling, but it was there pre-lithium. I think it is an effect of the effexor.
This is the end of the thread.
