Effexor dosage, Buspar

Posted by Dee Again on January 16, 2000, at 13:09:43

I crashed from the pink cloud of Serzone. I am now cradually getting rid of Serzone, then starting with effexor XR sometime beginning of February.
Questions:

- What should I expect as I am phasing Serzone out. Will it be as bad as getting it up?
- I will start with 75 mg Effexor XR and go up to 225mg @PM. Reading posts on this site it sounds like a lot...
- I will eventually have to drop Buspar because of $$$. Effexor will cost me $100/2 weeks, and Buspar $80/2 week. I cannot affort to take both. I've heard that effexor is FDA approved for the treatment of anxiety, can I just stp taking it when I'm on Effexor? Alternatives?

Sorry I've been suca an hermit
Dee.

P.S. I di find the previously discussed info about Serzone-Busbar interaction in B-Bar package insert. I'll meake a separate entry of it soon.

Hi, Dee.

When I started effexor, I began at 37.5 for a few days just to see how I tolerated it, and increased very gradually.

225 mg is not a lot. I take 375 mg, and that's along with all the other stuff I take.

It stinks to have to worry about cost. I guess you don't have a prescription plan with your insurance. The reason I mention this is that it is frequently the case that people do better on two or more meds in combo.

The negative affects that I have experienced are insomnia, fidgitiness, decreased libido, decreased sexual sensation, anorgasmia, muscle twitches, and urinary urgency. I have had intermittent memory issues, nothing major. On regular effexor, I had profuse sweating. Other people have reported drowsiness, and high blood pressure.

It seems to me like a lot of people on this board are on effexor xr.

Dee and Noa, I take Effexor-XR 225 mg/day (and hope to increase it more). I haven't had any bad side effects (unlike the SSRI's, which made me anorgasmic). I feel energized, and don't have the urinary urgency I had with Serzone. Of all the AD's I tried, I think Serzone and Effexor-XR have been the most side-effect-free for me. Serzone helped more with social anxiety, but Effexor-XR seems to help more with decreasing obsessing and ruminating. I hope I can ask my psychdoc about combining the two, next visit.--Cindy W

I see a Psychiatrist for anxiety/stress. He recommended 37.5mg of Effexor XR a day. This is half the starting dose. He told me that only small amounts of Effexor are needed to reduce anxiety and increasing the dose can actually negate the anxiety reduction benefit.
