Has anyone tried this combination--a low dose of effexor
added to a moderate dose of a TCA?

James here....

I was on this for years (effexor, 75 mgs, doxipin,75-150 mgs (whatever put me to sleep) )
The effexor 1) potentates 3 neurotransmitters 2)
causes the body to not metabolize TCA's as quickly.

This combo was very effective. Often adding another med cancels out side effects and makes both meds more effective. As effexor has a short life in your system (even in the XR) and TCA 's last weeks in your system watch you doses. If you increase on med to other will increase. Keep in touch with your doc and don't change dose as quickly as you would if you were on just one med.

Thanks James! I was afraid I'd never get an answer!
I've been taking disipramine for last 2 months,
and I was really about to give up on it, but it's
just recently kicked in and I'm starting to feel
actually "happy" :-). Sure seems to take longer
for the TCA's to take effect than it does the SSRI's--
with prozac I could usually feel better within a
week! However, I'm just glad it finally seems to
be working and I'm NOT having sexual side effects
with the TCA, thank god. I guess I was thinking
about adding a little effexor in hopes of getting
even more of an antidepressant effect, and maybe
more energy. I'll ask my p-doc about it...
Thanks again for your resonse, James.

Awesome Ruth! It has been a long wait hasn't it. Yep. So glad to see a little more sunshine in your life. May it continue. The only possible concern with adding Effexor has already been mentioned...possible elevation of TCA levels even though the TCA dose wasn't increased. But heck, they mix TCAs with MAOIs sometimes. Effexor with a TCA sounds mild compared to that. :)
