Would someone explain what "trigger" means in some of the above posts? Maybe I already know, but it seems like its psycho-jargon that I am not familiar with. I know the noun means the device that fires a gun and is used in the venacular to mean a catalyst or spark that ignites something, and the verb means pretty much the same thing - to actuate or case to happen. Is there some psychological term or internet term that means something else?

But in reality anything can trigger anybody, in my humble opinion. I like to think of a trigger as anything that upsets you without it being personally meant to do so. But I'm usually wrong about stuff anyway.

Maybe I overdo the 'trigger' warnings. I just know that when I am in a bad place I appreciate a warning before encountering stuff on abuse, SI, or suicide.

We womenfolk are generally guilt-filled, talkative creatures. We want to be able to share and commiserate with other carbon-based forms, (and, occassionally, our cats)but NEVER want to cause PAIN.
That's why we ALL may overuse the TRIGGER warning.
Alexandra, hon, don't take responsibility for the actions of others along with your own. You do not, all by yourself, OVERUSE the warning. And we appreciate it when you DO use it!

Honestly, for ME, I read many 'trigger' messages b/c they promise to be very interesting. To me, it's a signal that a person is talking about something of great importance and great significance to them. Even though I can't usually help them (don't know how) I'm still intrigued by the title and want to find out what's going on.
Usually when someone warns me that something might be too graphic or violent or just too "much" my first instinct is to say, "no it isn't" and then to check it out.

I hope it isn't misused (not an accusation, I'm new to PBTx). Lots of movie producers actually lobby to get an R rating to increase attendence.

No, I wasn't implying that is was mis-used. Thanks for clarifying!
But I do think it's a definite way to let others know that what you are writing about is very important to you (as well as 'triggering' to others, potentially) as a way to garner extra interest from those who care about you & your life.
I also think that people use it 'just in case', even if they're message isn't all that triggering in their opinion, just to be sure that no one is hurt or scared by it. Sort of a social validation thing...it's the norm now. Not bad by any means...it's just interesting how it works here. :)

It's a considerate thing to do, for sure, Jen. I am just reminded of that gag we used to pull as a kid. You make a sign that says, "Do not look under here!" Then when you pull up the sign it says, "I said don't look under here, knucklehead!" Trigger may have the opposite effect than it's intention. But it's a new internet convention for me.

Thank G*d, I was going to send back an equally flip response, but was terrified that you were serious!!
MOST "mentally ill" people (should I label us as that??) are given one gift from God- intelligence. But not ALL are- I was afraid to offend!
And I am rather new here- I'll get to "know" some of you after a while, I guess!
I use "my sick sense of humor" as my shield a lot... I think it is the only thing that has saved the world from realizing how f***d up I am on the inside !

I'm so screwed up that I think I'm OK. Humor is hard to pull off here, I've found; partially because there's hypersensitivity; partially because a lot of humor involves sarcasm which is verboten; and mainly because most things that humor me are frankly stupid, sophomoric, mental flatulence from a troubled mind.

See, I'm the kind of person who would lift that fig leaf "just to see." Someone once told me there is a bar (not sure which city) which has a fig-leaved statue in the bathroom. The leaf is hooked up to a buzzer. When a curious patron checks under the leaf, a light flashes/buzzer rings in and outside the bar, embarrassing the newbie.
That sounds like a fun concept. Wonder if it's true?
