Are these get-togethers just for you, Dr. Bob, and maybe the deputies and certain others? Or, are they for anyone?
If for anyone, is it usual to post the upcoming occasion on the social board? I've not noticed, if it has been on social.

They are for everyone. The admin board is where it's usually posted. There have been threads on the social board about the get togethers after they happened. There may have been some talking about them beforehand as well, but the primary source of info and planning is always here.

Tks gg.
I'm not far from San Diego.
Am I allowed to attend or 'how does it work'?

I'm jealous because I can't afford to go. :( I don't know any details anyone has come up with yet. Usually someone periodically takes a headcount of who all is going. As it gets closer, they start to talk about specific dates and what they'll do there. I went to the one in Chicago a couple of years ago. Dr. Bob created a listserv just for folks who were going to that one so we could talk about specific plans and still feel safe about disclosing personal info and specific locations/times, etc. I believe he did the same for last year's trip as well. As far as I know, that hasn't happened for this one yet.
Maybe someone could take a headcount to see where things stand?

That's a good idea, where do things stand? I haven't been around -- sorry about that -- but I'm still looking forward to getting together with some Babblers!

I am definitely 'thinking about it'!
I live two driving hours away.
Unfortunately, I've only been there once and it was quite a long time ago.
I'm not sure which post above gives the correct information re: dates and place to meet, etc., but I may have missed some emails.
I've been 'under the weather' and have had some fear of getting online re: 'unhealthy messages from family'. But, as I think back upon prior Aprils in my life, they've always tended to be difficult for me.(?)
Someone could write to the Chamber of Commerce re: a pkg rate at a decent hotel or motel.
I would probably drive, enabling me to p/u anyone, two, three, or four, from airport. (FYI -Have a decent car, license, insurance, AAA, abide w/ seatbelt laws, drive carefully, might take a wrong turn here or there but what would life be like if we didn't get lost once in a while .. ha, oh but here's the bad part, I'm a smoker.)
I'll follow thread along now and go back upwards reading them these next days. It gets confusing when suddenly I realize I'm reading a post from 2005 or 2006!
Glad you're back Dr. Bob! Missed you!

ps: If deputies hooked me up in thread, I appreciate it. Thanks!

Just had a thought ...
If any1 would find flying into Sky Har*or in P*oenix less expensive, I could pick you up and you could ride w/ me to SD.
Use babble feature, or here, if this sounds like a plan which might help someone.

ps: Don't hate me 'cuz I smoke :( .. hope I'm not the only one!

And they aren't so high, if I don't mind some inconvenience and discomfort.
But is there a Yahoo group set up? Who all is planning to attend?

I've set one up for next May, for people who are definitely coming. It'll be the weekend of the 3rd.

Sorry - I tried to look back at the thread, etc to see where the party is?
Is it an In Real Life party or online or what?
thx, Kath

I sure hope it will be an real life party, because I'm planning to go to Washington for it! And I'll sign up as an attendee for the APA presentation so I can cheer on the participants.

...on looking for accomodations, I've found the prices rather high. If anyone has any ideas, e.g. a clean hotel near a subway, rather than right downtown? I've always wanted to 'do' Washington, but I'm not made of money. I'd appreciate some feedback.
TIA,

Me too, Lar. The only times I've been before, I was on business $, so the high cost of the accommodations, transportation, and food didn't bother me so much. But whooeee, it's 'spensive! I guess we're not very likely to find some Babble cabin set up. ;)

I stayed In Quantico WV last time I was down that way.. I think it was aboiut a 45 minute drive but the prices were normal. would have to rent a car though..maybe a little farther away would be more affordable for you

>He's actually better off just paying a little more for a hotel room in or close to DC. When you factor in the rental car ($30-50/day for a cheap one) plus Metro costs (~$12/day for parking & the train), he's already half way to the cost of a hotel room in the city. You're just not going to find a cheap hotel near any metro stop. That's just the way it is out here.
If anyone needs help with knowing if a hotel is in a good location, I'll help out. I know all the good and bad parts of DC. Just don't expect a cheap place to be located in a good area.

My general thought was to drive down, so I'd have my own car. However, I'm aware of some legendary traffic congestion in the Washington area, so the idea of commuting in from e.g. Quantico has little appeal. Particularly because my health is unreliable, I'd hate to face a commute out through all that traffic, if I had to cut short a day due to feeling unable to continue. A subway ride wouldn't be too onerous.
Thuso, would you be willing to suggest a hotel or two? Near a Metro station, perhaps? That would take care of the neighbourhood question without my having to ask.
TIA,
Lar

I hope I can go. I'm pretty poor. To save for this trip I'm going to spend a max of $60/month on food and drink and won't buy anything nonessential. This means no clothes, no going out to eat, no buying coffee, nothing! 2008 is the year of saving! I'm going to try to eat all the canned food we have in the house before I buy any food for my own.
I'm going to buy food on sale and drink tap water and bring my own thermos of coffee.
Depending on how much I can save, I will decide whether to go or not.
I need to save for my future. I don't have a house or car or anything.
I will save enough money! From now on I'm not spending one dollar without writing it down first.

So Babble activities on the third and fourth?
I'm looking into it and am finding it rather expensive.
