When you factor in the rental car ($30-50/day for a cheap one) plus Metro costs (~$12/day for parking & the train), he's already half way to the cost of a hotel room in the city. You're just not going to find a cheap hotel near any metro stop. That's just the way it is out here.

My general thought was to drive down, so I'd have my own car. However, I'm aware of some legendary traffic congestion in the Washington area, so the idea of commuting in from e.g. Quantico has little appeal. Particularly because my health is unreliable, I'd hate to face a commute out through all that traffic, if I had to cut short a day due to feeling unable to continue. A subway ride wouldn't be too onerous.
Thuso, would you be willing to suggest a hotel or two? Near a Metro station, perhaps? That would take care of the neighbourhood question without my having to ask.
TIA,
Lar
