We went to the death factory yesterday
To see my sister off
Which is kind of odd in itself
Since she actually left on Sunday morning
But anyways - that's a story for another day
So there we were looking down on this line of hearses
Old Henry woulda been so proud
A perfect production line -
Of death
And better yet
It came in any colour you wanted
As long as it was black
Four ovens
No waiting
Would you like fries with that?
And a sea of lost souls
Looking for a face they recognise
A touchpoint for their pain
Somewhere in all that sadness
Feed 'em in
Grind 'em up
Spit 'em out
Next friends and family please
"Christ, what a shambles can I go back to the car?"
"Dad, you can do whatever you want
But mum will never let you hear the end of it."
"You're right, guess it'll be less painful in the long run."
"Probably"
And then came the old crones, vultures
Circling
Picking the scabs off our sorrow
Pecking at our eyes
"Oh J*** I'm"
A quick move to cut her off at the pass
"No, I wouldn't, please just leave him be."
"Oh, if you think it's best"
"Oh I do, trust me, thank you."
And now the minister too
Christ! (well his messenger anyway)
A sideways step
Hand thrust out
Subtle body check
"I'm D***** her brother, and I wouldn't - seriously - thanks."
"G'day M***"
"D***, how ya doin'"
"Okay, was just thinking that
The only people missing are the dogs"
"Yeah you're right, they really should be here."
And then mercifully it's showtime
Roll up! Roll up!
Death the final act
For a limited time only
"Deep breath dad."
"Oh, G'day, did you know S?"
"Huh, arr, no I thought this was P's?"
"Nup."
"Oh, I'm sorry, but do you mind if I stay,
I actually feel more comfortable here?"
"No, of course not mate make yourself at home,
Right now you feel less of a stranger to me
Than anyone else in the room."
"Thanks"
"Don't mention it."
Can everyone please take their seats.
"No M***! you can't sit there!"
"For g**sake Mum, it's his wifes funeral
He can sit anywhere he bloody well wants."
"Deep breath dad, just leave it"
"Sit!"
"Don't worry mate
I would leave ya hanging here on the end"
"I just wanted to be close to the door - in case"
"Mate, if it comes to that I'll race ya,
Hang in there, it'll be over soon."
And it is
Just not soon enough
For anyone
And my old man can't do the afterwards thing
So I make the apologies
And we go and sit in the car
Just the two us
And it's the closest we've ever been
And we talk
Really, really talk
And wait
And wait
And wait
Finally my mother appears
And I go and say goodbye to my BIL
And let him know one of the tires on his car is flat
And make sure he understands
Just in case - cause that'd be all they need.
And I take them home and sit with them
And make coffee
And listen
And sitNo replies please.
